newbie question on hook-ups

I just jumped off the analog wagon and bought a 40 inch Sony Bravia. I also have a Sony Multimedia receiver that is a few years old. I used to have it hooked up to my old VCR/DVD combo so I could playback movies through the steroe speakers of the receiver.

I tried to hook up a DVD player with an HDMI connector to the TV and composite connectors to the receiver, but I don't get any sound.

Any ideas?

Would photos of my hook up be helpful?
