You can read the interview but basically a MS employee said we choose HD-DVD because:

Security features block consumers rights
Hybrid blu ray discs are all fake
50 gig blu ray discs are all fake
The "extra features" on BR discs are all useless
China fully supports HD-DVD only
BR discs will cost a huge amount per disc

Anything to hurt the PS3 I guess...
