Default Blu-Ray 'ghost trails' question

So, I just got this new 1080p Samsung (32"). Blu-Ray movies look amazing, except in dark scenes or poorly-lighted rooms. Anything that movies on-screen trails a little. I've already calibrated the television, but I'm not sure how to fix this problem. Any advice?

Also, the effect also happens in PS3 video games. For example, if any of you have played InFamous, there are segments of the game where you're in a part of the city that has no power. That's when it'll happen.

Yes, my PS3 is hooked up through a HDMI port. I've also tried out my 360, but I don't think I encountered major dark areas.

I wish I had a picture to show... I know it's a 550 model.

Sounds like a greyscaling issue. I would suggest getting a calibration disc and calibrating your telivision. Another less effective possibility would be tp find 'calibrated' settings for your tv model by users on this forum or similiar.

Well, it was calibrated recently using a feature that came with one of the Star Wars DVDs. Basically a THX tutorial on how to set it up.

Where would I go to find that though? I'm new to the forums, obviously.

Thumbs up

Hello Sam(I think you're Sam), I have NO idea how to calibrate your TV but if you wait a bit there should be some replies in here about it. Oh and welcome to the forums. The only advice I can give is your TV should have normal, video game and movie modes, might try switching between those.

I just noticed you are using a ps3, make sure you set it up to auto detect video settings (like you did the first time you turned on the ps3, to do so I believe you hold down the on button for several seconds, or you can do it via the settings menu). Also make sure that the super white function is off on the ps3 and that output at 24fps is on. On the tv side, make sure any post processing such as motion ionterpolation is off. The THX calibration included on dvd's isn't very good, I strongly suggest something like this (make sure that the color filter is included). http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Video-...6007402&sr=8-1

If you want to have the best possible picture and have a few hundred dollars to spare you may consider an ISF calibration. If you give the exact model number we may be able to help you more. Well ....... I hope i'm helping.

excellence - I have a similar model TV and experienced a similar problem when I bought it:

turn OFF the Digital NR feature in the menu...that should do it, but report back if it doesn't

Thank you both for the awesome advice. I'll try it out.

But first, what exactly is the Digital NR feature?

Digital NR is noise reduction that commonly does more bad than good...it attempts to get rid of grain and digital noise present in video content. most features included like this on HDTVs are gimmicks and should be turned off for the most natural picture.

I concur. DNR and Digital Reality or the like is like poison to 1080p. Try turning them off and reporting back.

I had an issue with the Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag IMAX Blu-ray which is in 1080i. Everything looked truly over Edge Enhanced out of the box! The issue went away, and the picture looked perfect when I turned our Sony's Digital Reality feature off.

Sometimes they give you more than you need!

I just turned DNR off. It looks a little worse now. =/ Not only do the trails persist, but the picture looks worse too.

I haven't tried any of the PS3 modifying yet, but truth be told... I can't figure out how. I went into the video settings... but I couldn't find any of the stuff you were talking about.

First off, Turn off ALL the enhancements that the TV offers. From the feature set I see on Samsung's page, it would be MOVIE PLUS. But seriously, turn off EVERYTHING.

Secondly, use a calibration tool on a BD, not on DVD. The color space is not the same. Most SPHE titles have this and Pixar titles too. Every time you change a setting - like turning on Dynamic Contrast - you need to recalibrate.

The settings are is quite confusing on the ps3, but persist with it and i'm sure you'll figure it out. I'm not near my ps3 at the moment but I should be later tonight and I can post up exactly where to go. What blu ray disc are you using to test on by the way?

To reitterate what others have saif, make sure all post processing is off (even if when you first turn on of it looks worse, wait till you've turned all post processing of, calibrate and then make an informed decision).

Well, I watched the Bourne trilogy on Blu-Ray the past three days, and I'm about to start on Benjamen Button. I figure I might order this calibration disc you linked me to and see where I can go with that. It's a worthy investment, I suppose.

And no, I don't have a few hundred dollars to spare unfortunately. I'm a meager college student. Hahaha

I'm also a uni student and an ISF calibration is not a plausability for me, but it's also worth mentioning as with a worthy set, an ISF calibration is mind blowingly good. The disc is deffinatly worth the investement if and when you can afford it and have the hardware to match.

By hardware, I'm guessing you mean a damn good surge protector?

EDIT: This is basically my television.

At a quick glance, i'd try turning the 120 hrtz mode on or off and see the difference, also ensure your outputing at 1080p as this can also make a difference. Though it really does sound like an artifact from motion interpolation to me (maybe you got a faulty set? ).

That last part doesn't sound good at all. D:

I didn't get a warranty or anything, but it also hasn't been 30 days since I got the television.

Maybe the surge protector will do its job? I should probably also get that disc you referred me to on Amazon. I'm ordering it now.

i have to say, i agree with a lot of suntory's statements and i think getting a good protector makes good sense, but even having one or calibrating your tv, it shouldn't be doing what you're describing. there must be some feature on your tv or ps3 that is enabled causing it to ghost like that...have you turned every single "special feature" setting in your tv's menu off?
