Default Poor quality blu ray

Hi,

I just joined today and am hoping someone can help me.

I have a sony s350 blu ray player and a 46" sony bravia tv. I was delighted with the quality of picture when i first bought them but recently when watching saw 5 i noticed that some of the scenes were extremely fuzzy or grainy?? I noticed it again watching transformers. Some scenes were crystal clear and some were awful and worse then terrestrial tv. Can anyone tell me if it is just the way the movie was made or is it my equipment?

Welcome to the site, Sars!

To get to your question, the quality of a movie's video "transfer" to Blu-ray subjects it to some of the limits of the original film quality. In come cases, image clarity degradation is simply related to the quality of the original film.

However, Saw V and Transformers are recent movies. Transformers has particularly good PQ (picture quality) throughout. If I were you, I'd check to make sure that all video noise reduction is turned OFF in your Sony TV's Picture Settings menu. Believe it or not, video noise reduction can actually bring down the image quality on occasion. If I'm not mistaken, the default setting is "Low" or something to that effect.

On some movies, image degradation is intentional and a part of the film. The heavy "grain" in the movie "300" is intentional, for example.

Your choice of a Sony BDP-S350 is a good one. I have the same player and I have not had any problems with it. You may want to update the firmware on it if you have not already, which will keep the player compatible with all the Blu-ray titles out there.

actually i can spot some heavy grain in transformers myself ONLY at certain times. other then those few seconds or minutes tho, transformers has pretty much good PQ throughout the movie. I spot a lot of grain during some dark scenes especially the few minutes in sam's house with the autobots hiding outside.

in terms of saw 5 on blu ray .... ya that's just pretty bad PQ

Any time you see grain in a movie it's not defective its the way it's supposed to look and usually implies what kind of camera the movie was filmed with. Next time just google your question you'll getter better and more nformitive answers then you will on a forum most of the time. Me personally I like a little grain, but to each there own.

Turn down (or completely off) the sharpness level on your display. It is not needed for blu-ray.
