I apologize if I missed where the policy here was spelled out. I'm a phpBB guy from way back and vBulletin links sometimes escape me.
I thought it best if I ask before posting anything about this or the software used. Specifically - what is the policy here about backing up legally-owned DVDs under the Fair Use Doctrine? I'm talking about making a legal backup of a purchased DVD for use as a "working" copy, while storing away the original for safekeeping. I know this is a touchy subject at many forums, and a good way to get yourself carded or warned if you don't find out first. There is a law forbidding it, but there is also the commonly recognized Fair Use Doctrine which exempts legal owners. I'm not talking about "backing up" Netflix - that's clearly piracy. I'm referring to a single, legal copy for the owner's own use. OK to post, or verboten here? |

nothing in the rules about it, but I do recall reading something along the lines of not posting how-to's on activities that could be used for illegal activities. I think that is pushing it! I would confer with a moderator before posting something like that. |

![]() I wonder how the forum management deals with the use of standalone recorders. After all, it could be used for recording copyrighted material ![]() On my forum I allow discussions about backing up legally owned copies, but I don't allow warez, torrent or bootlegging discussions. That would make me vulnerable legally, being the site owner. Last edited by Capmaster; 06-26-2007 at 08:30 PM. |

Marwin or Iceman will have to address this, but my understanding is that we want to stay away from any of that discussion. While we recognize that their is legal copying being done, the guides and software are usually used by those doing so illegally. Rather than deal with that, best just to stay away.
