Default Upconverting Backups

I don't know about you, but I have a lot of backups on DVD. These are Discs created from my VHS versions on a Standalone DVD-Recorder. Why wont a Blu-ray player up convert a burnt disc like a boughten disc?

If you've created them from VHS, then it's because there's nothing there to bring out. Garbage in, Garbage out

You can't make gold out of rust.

Standard DVD sources at 480 lines of horizontal resolution
VHS sources at 240 lines of horizontal resolution

Putting a 240 image on a media that will handle 480 doesn't mean that the 240 image becomes 480. It reamains whatever it's original resolution is.

Ok, what about discs burnt in the computer, like those Anime bootlegs that over-populate ebay.

If you're wondering if that huge collection of pirated movies you downloaded are going to look amazing on a blu-ray player, the answer is still the same- garbage in, garbage out.

It can improve the look of dvds that have decent authoring but if they're a mess, they're still going to look a mess. I have the latest Harry Potter on dvd and for whatever reason (dunno if it's just a bad disk or they're all like that) it has horrible compression artifacts/mosquito noise throughout. It still looks like crap in an upconverting player- including my PS3. It's not a magic wand.
