Hi, please bare with me as I'm not very experienced in this. I had someone hook up my new Onkyo receiver. We could not get it to show DD True Audio or DTS. We tried this with my Sharp BD player and connected to the receiver via HDMI. I set the player's video out to HDMI. I'd appreciate any assistance. The link below is for the Sharp player. Thanks

Your receiver should show Multichannel PCM or Linear PCM (LPCM), the Blu-ray player you have will internally decode DDTHD and send it out as a PCM signal. Your BDP will not Bitstream DDTHD or DTS HD, in fact it will not internally decode DTS HD either. The only movies you will get in lossless "HD audio" are the ones with Uncompressed PCM and DDTHD as the audio choice, which you can find on the back of the movies. Whether your receiver says LPCM/multichannel PCM or Doldy Digital True HD, you are still getting the lossless audio, so you are fine.

according to the tech info on your blu ray player, you cannot get DTS-HD-MA because your player can neither decode it internally nor bitstream it out (unless it has had a firmware update to enable either or both) but it can internally decode DTHD and send it out LPCM (decoded at the source/player and streamed out with no decoding by the receiver) via HDMI. due to the limitations of your player your receiver will not (again unless your player gets a firmware enabling bitstreaming) light up and show the codecs of DTS-HD-MA or DTHD.
If your player is set to "Direct" (it's a listening mode, look it up in your book or on your remote under listening modes) it will light up and show the "core/lossy" codecs which are DTS or DD. If you do get another player (I highly recommend going all the way and get the Oppo blu) it will bitstream the codecs to your Onkyo and you will get the codec lights for those HD audio codecs (then you'll really hear something) The Oppo will also send out LPCM to your receiver via HDMI or if you prefer, it has 7.1 analog out that you can use with your receiver too. Also, the Oppo does SACD & DVD-A for the best music you have ever heard. I have one and it's one of the best upgrades I've done for my setup in years; it's the best for the money. best of luck to you. |
