Default Sony Speaker System. What do you think?

Im looking at these floorstanding speakers to replace my Onkyo HTiB speakers. Forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical, but these speakers seem to cheap to be good lol but I could be wrong.

Sony SS-F7000 (pair for $219.97)

My question again is would these be a good pair for front speakers and how do they compare to the likes of say Polks or Klipsch speakers.

Also how about this center and these surrounds.

Sony SS-CN5000 Center Channel ($79.97)

Sony SS-B3000 Rear and Surround Rear Speakers for 7.1 (2 pairs for about $180)

Let me know what you guys think.

They would be considered a step or 2 below the Polks/Klipsch brands. If you are looking for good speakers on a very tight budget (which it appears you could be) Then for $240 you could have these 2 floorstanding Polks...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290013

You would then need a center speaker to timber match these and you could try this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290022

Great deal for some good speakers on a tight budget!

Nice those polk 50s look nice. However, I think I'd go with the CS10 for the center or is there something better about the CS1 that I am not aware of?

I'd also take a look at Energy Speakers, The C-series can be had for some great prices and they are amazing speakers.

C-300 Floorstander

Just an example of one deal, but there are many options. Check the Energy Thread for more info if you'd like.

First, I want you to know I was going on the cheap for you. The only difference is the CS10 has the black piano finish on the sides of the cabinet and the CS1 does not. The CS1 cosmetically matches the Monitor 50's, that's why I suggested it. They will sound exactly the same.

I owned Sonys before, I had the F-5000s, CN-5000 and B-1000s, I can tell you from experience that the center channel will be weak and under powered compared to the fronts and you will lose dialog. The other thing is that the Sony speakers tend to be a little boomy and the mids are not very accurate.

I would suggest getting the Energy C-300s(amazon.com $114 ea) and a C-C50($79 wwstereo.com or 99 Amazon.com) center channel or a C-C100 but you may have to buy from Ebay(new $159), paired with some C-100 or C-50(wwstereo.com $94) Surrounds. You will find that movies and music will be accurate and smooth. I listen to more music now then I ever had before I got my energys. Mids will be well definded, highs accurate and bass response tight. Pair these with an acoustic audio sub($160-199) or premier acoustic sub($229) and you will have a great setup.

C-300x2 $228
C-C50 $79
C-C50x4 $188

Total $495 (and a much better system, trust me)

I run all SONYs and have nothing bad to say about them - however, your BEST BET is to find a local home theater/electronics store that stocks them and take a listen - I honestly liked the SONYs better than the Polks that I auditioned - but to each his own - your own ear will tell you what sounds best.

Good luck!

I think Sony speakers are a bit above average at a very good price if you like the sound you can't go wrong.

I think you need to give a listen for yourself and see what sounds good to your ears. Opinions are just that, and I'm sure you know that everone has one. You have been given some options to consider, so use the time you have to listen to some different manufacturers to make a good decision. Good luck!

I agree with forsberg on taking a long look and much thought on getting the Polk Audio Speakers.

The Sonys are not Bad speakers, but for close to the same price you can get audibly better speakers.
Energy does get great reviews as well, and also have an avid following. So like has been mentioned if you can find someplace to test these speakers take advantage of this option.

If not there will a great deal of excellent advice from the Many Wise Members Here on the Forum.

I personally don't care for Sony, Polk, or Klipsch (all for different reasons) but think Polk or Klipsch speakers, at that price point, would be a better solution, as would Energy, as someone else suggested.

It comes down to what you like, but you should certainly entertain other options.

OH how I wish I listened to some Energy's before I bought my Polks. I like the sound better, it seemed "cleaner" in the mid-range to me. Or should I be saying "open" and "airy"?

So does this mean you are now a fan?

Really I think if music is 25% of your use or more, you have to go with the Energys over the Polks. Strictly movies, could prolly go either way, I still lean Energys, but thats me.

I listened to some TSi400s the other day with music at BB and they sound good, the low end extension wasn't quite what I expected from a speaker that claims 38hz with 3 drivers, and like you said the mids aren't as open but the sound overall is good. Previously I had given the Monitor 50/60s and TSi300s all a good solid listen but not the TSi400s, I listened to about 3 songs. There is a slight sonic difference between the Monitors and TSi's. I like the TSi's better personally.

Mid bass on the Energys is a little more pronounced and overall musically they are more open and accurate. IMO.

The Sony speakers sound fine until you listen to them compared to a pair of Polk's. Then they sound muffled and quiet.

I definitely would not get the Sony center. The frequency's on that speaker just aren't right for a center channel.

If you're looking for budget speakers that sound really good, look at www.thespeakercompany.com The RC1 is an excellent center speaker, regardless of the cheap price. Comparable to Polk and the like for a fraction of the price.

I have the SS-F7000s, SS-B3000s, SS-CN5000 and the SA-W3000 for my 5.1 setup. I think they sound amazingly good for the prices I paid. I have no complaints and I'm sorry I didn't just buy this set initially.

I've previously owned the following Polk sets: R50/R15/CSi25/PSW10 and RTiA5/RTiA1/CSiA4/PSW10.

I found the RTi A series to just be too bright and fatiguing. The Sony have much smoother and more lifelike highs, though the Polk RTi As had slightly tighter bass than the Sony's. Overall I prefer the Sony set to either of the Polk sets, and the Polks, especially the RTi As, cost much more.

I also own a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers and prefer the Sony SS-B3000s to them. The highs the Sonys produce are just fabulous to me...amazingly lifelike without any harshness or fatigue. It's too bad that Sony doesn't make an "ES" speaker line with a better build quality and drivers for tighter bass.

Wow, I can't comment on the RTiAs but to think that the Sonys had better more accurate highs"?" seems strange to me. I know that the Monitor series has some slightly exaggerated highs, but I would have figured the RTiAs would have been more smoothed out personally. Can't wait to find a place to audition some RTiAs and see what they sound like.

To me, the Sonys had more low end, but it was boomy and not tight, the highs were OK, but the midrage was weak, and the CN-5000 just could not hold itself against the towers. Detail and clarity were missing big time too, overpowered by the boomyness of the 8" woofer.

The Monitors didn't have the low end extension of the Sonys, but the midrange and highs to me were better, although the highs seem exaggerated some on the Monitors now that I compare them with the Energys and the midrage on the Energys are more open and cleaner. Detail gets better with the Polks over the Sonys.

When I went from Sonys to Energys, I was amazed at how much better the detail was and the clarity of the audio quality was. So much subtle sounds in music and movies that I had never heard before. Literally every action movies was like watching it new all over again.

To each his own, but Sonys to me are a begining speaker system and it goes up from there.
