Default speaker system

I have a 56in panasonic TV and a PS3 and I'm now looking for a speaker system. I, like many others in here, am on a small budget. Does anyone know much about the Sony ht-ss2300? I know the htib's get railed against but it seems as if this system has received positive reviews.

I see a lot of people recommend the onkyo 606 receiver and the polk rm6750 as a good starter setup. Is this setup worth the extra $200 over the sony system?

Since the ps3 does all the decoding would it make more sense to get a less capable receiver like the sony 720 with some sony 5000 floorstanding speakers? I know this is a lot but I need some serious help. Thanks in advance!

One last piece of important information...I live in a small apartment...main room in probably about
20x10.

Hello....

1) Nice T.V.

2) HTIB get bad press around here for good reason usually.....

3) What reviews are you referring to..... amazon.com ones??? many people who have never heard a proper system may buy this, say "it's great" because it's leaps and bounds beyond their T.V. speakers they are used to

4) Having the PS3 certainly gives you options.....

5) The polks are good speakers for the price, If you can fit a 5.1 into your budget, I'd say it's definitely worth the extra $200

5.5) I personally don't care for sony speakers..... I'd recommend listening to some Polk towers (found on sale quite often)

6) Welcome to the site

Sony's website says it will pass 5.1 PCM.

but...

A. Ive found Sony's website to be plagued with many errors in the past.

B. Would not buy this system because id regret it down the road. Use the money for something worth keeping in the long run.

We have this in our office and it does pass the 5.1 like stated. I would also suggest building a real system unless there is a budget issue. GL and welcome.

thanks for welcoming me to the site. I've been trying to do as much research as possible before buying.

It sounds like I should stay away from the sony ht-ss2300. Would it make more sense to buy a receiver and the polk rm6750 or purchase a receiver and a couple front speakers, like the polk monitor 50s for now? and worry about buying the sub and surrounds later on?

I see there are quite a few who just buy the rm6750 and then upgrade that as they go. Once again thanks for all your help.

By the way, what are your feelings on the polk r50's? I see these are selling for 59 each on fry's.

This is my STANDARD advice usually....... and "Yeah" if you're willing to be patient, I'd say you'll be much happier down the road by building a set-up this way.

As far as the 50's, people seem to like them... it's dependent on your budget I guess.

If you can swing it, I'd suggest getting the center channel right away too......

Are the polk r50's a better value at $120 for the pair than the polk monitor 50s at $300 for the pair? I'm going to purchase one of these two pairs with the csi1 center channel and a decent receiver. Could actually also use receiver help to go with m ps3. I'll start there and then add on later. thanks

The Monitor is definitely a better line, and if you wait for a sale or get the TSi series you can get them for 200 dollars for the pair.

The TSi series is the same as the Monitor series.

I own the Tsi300s and they are basically the monitor series but they changed the port from the front (monitor series) to the bottom (tsi series) the grill design was changed too and they added a nice gloss finish to cabinet. Love em

Sorry. I've been busy with my SDA 2's! Okay, wait for my next post. By the way did you care if I included tower speakers and an eD sub? Did you want me to include a receiver as well?
