Default The CLASSIC ROCK Thread!

If I could define exactly what classic rock is, I would do so. Most people seem to identify it with music that came from the 60's and 70's, perhaps early 80's as well. Others seem to identify specific artists with it. Some a combination of both. Regardless of which side (or both) your view hails from, this thread is hopefully a place whereby we can talk about and express our views on the misnomer (IMO) Classic Rock is.

What is Classic Rock to you? Who are the artists you identify with in that era? Why is that music still so sought after and enjoyed by new generations? Or is it? Tell me about your favourite artists and albums! Your concert experiences! Do you still buy "Classic Rock" music?

Share your opinions and let's have some fun!

John

Not a major fan, if I'm being honest, but are the following artists the kind that are to be discussed?

Wow, John. Wow. What a thread.

You're very right about your assessment into classic rock's definition: it might be the vaguest of any genre out there!

For starters, classic rock at this point — especially since we're now into the latter portion of the first decade of the 2000s — must be expanded to encompass any rock from the 1980s, and early 1990s. It sucks, but it must be so by definition, as anything from then is at least 15 years old; and obviously anything from the 1980s is now at least 20 years old. For me personally, I have trouble calling anything classic rock anything that comes after about 1985 or so. Bands that get an exemption to that is any band that played music before then, but continued (or still continues) to put out music. Examples might be Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, or any band like that.

From a purely grandfatheristic viewpoint, classic rock to me started in the mid- to late 1960s with the likes of your Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, et al. Anything that featured "hard" lead guitar, solos, prolonged jam sessions with progressive styling, etc. is where you start. I know there are a ton of bands I'm leaving out; part of that is because I'm too young to truly know all of the godfathers of the genre, but part of that is also because there are simply too many bands to list that contributed to the best genre ever.

There are plenty other "non hard" bands that contributed to the classic rock genre as well, like Steely Dan, Steve Miller, Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, and even bluesy artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, so I do not want to forget about those guys. Clapton also comes to mind as a non-hard, yet extremely influential and fitting classic rock artist.

I tend to also lump "classic metal" into the "classic rock" genre, since there's a bit of a grey area in those classifications. I mean what is Black Sabbath? Led Zeppelin? Deep Purple? Rainbow? Definitely very hard, and probably the biggest contributors to the metal genre, but they're definitely not as hard as some of the ones that originated in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Then you've got all those "southern rock" bands that I tend to simply consider to be classic rock as well — your Lynyrd Skynyd, Blackfoot, Outlaws, and so on.

I always say I was born about 20 years too late, in that I missed a lot of music with which I've always most closely identified — classic rock!

...and Jethro Tull

A nice dash of Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep, and Bad Company never hurts either.

The classic rock is what I try to maintain and collect on vinyl with the vast majority of the metal, industrial, and electronic going to CD.

Tull and Rush are BOTH solid examples of classic rock, and definitely two of my favorites.

There are so many sounds, bands, artists, instruments, and moods that would fit into "classic" rock that we could be here all night.

I will give the one sound to me that is the very definition of CLASSIC ROCK:

Fa dum fa dum pow pa pa pow pa pa pow Fa dum fa dum pow pa pa pow pa pa pow.....

Jimmy Page, joined by John Paul Jones, joined by John ('enry) Bohnam, joined by Robert Plant on the intro of "Whole Lotta Love".

That is Classic Rock to me.

It kills me, but yes, I do. I just keep telling myself that it's all about the music (I say the same about Green Day). I was, however, highly upset at one point during the 2003 Chapel Hill concert where he decided to take shots at Bush/Cheney. I paid $80 to listen to music, not his misguided opinions.

Borderline? Give me some Rattle and Hum! Just think of Bono (today) as being abducted by aliens and reprogrammed to a crazy person.

Love the Cars. Great band.

Baby, I'm not foolin'.

Without a doubt my favorite band of all-time.

I can't figure out your text riff to start off your post, though. I'm trying to match up those words with the song, but I'm having some trouble!
