Default Is Blu-ray worth it on 720p

I own a 52inch LCD rear projection Mitsubishi. I have been watching DVD's on my upconverted Xbox 360 pro model. The resolution on my TV is only 720p. Will Blu Ray stand out as superior to the Xbox player even though my set cannot acheive 1080p?

Xbox is an awful upscaler btw.. So BluRay should look tons better. The thing is.. i don't have you're eyes, you're display and i'am not you. All i can say is that at 720p here, i see a pretty huge difference between DVD and BluRay

my new 32" sammy is only a 720 and it is definitely different. If I'm nt mistaken, the PS3 upconverts. and theres still no comparrison. Blu-ray hands down

Yes... Your collection will be future proof... when your current TV set p1$$es you off and you buy a new one, it will be like watching them anew again!!!

i have a 720p set and blu looks amazing.

i've seen blu on a high-end 1080p set and it puts my 720p set to shame.

it only gets better.

spend some time learning how to calibrate what you have. you should be amazed with the results.

Much sharper and cleaner, you will enjoy it. I highly recommend the BD30. I have my BD30 outputting 720p to my tv and it's even sharper than the ps3 at 720p.

Upscaled DVD is not as good as BD, even at 720p. The difference is even more noticeable, obviously, at 1080p, but you will see a difference in clarity and sharpness from upscaled DVD to BD.

Absolutely! Sometimes I watch my Blu's on a standard def 480i tv I have in my office and it looks as good as any upconverting dvd player does on a hi-def tv. On your 720p set, it will blow your upconverting xbox away PQ-wise.

I encourage you to check it out for yourself. Welcome to the forum!

Yes! And also you'd be future proof if you ever got a 1080p t.v.
And I have an off topic question for you: You say you have an xbox 360 pro model, what is that? I've had a launch 360, an Elite 360 and now a Halo 3 Edition 360. But WTH is a pro model, is that just what you like to call the Elite or are you a pro-gamer and as such get a different console not available to everyone else?

480 to 720p is a greater more impressive jump than 720p to 1080p.

1080p is ideal but 720p is damn good and the difference isn't as big of a deal. You really need a 50 inch TV to begin to notice the difference in my opinion.

I have a 1080i HDTV and have heard that it and 720p are pretty much the same. I was amazed by the difference between my old DVDs and Blu.

Definitely worth it!

There is a difference from the 720p and 1080p. It depends on your television if your tv only produces upto a 1080i/720p image then the pixels will be slightely larger than on a tv that produces 1080p. If you can tell the difference, the only time I could while at best buy was when it was on a 50" screen or bigger. a 42" screen and smaller it is hard for the eyes to notice unless your sitting 5 inches from the screen. Don't get me wrong 720p true high def is better than any dvd or upconvert ever, 1080p yes is clearer. I love it and I am only watching 720p on my HP 42" Plasma.

Upconversion, while a nice idea, takes 480 lines of resolution and displays those "480 lines of information" in a higher resolution. So, basically upconversion was just a way to sell more dvd players.

Blu-ray is HD. I'm sure you've seen HD programming via CBS, NBC, Fox, etc. Expect Blu-ray to look like that only better.

There is a profound difference between 420 and 720p, you WILL notice a difference. 720 to 1080 is a little bit less noticeable unless you have a very large TV, 40+ inches. Though you can still tell.

+1 It is quite a jump in quality from 480 to 720. Definitely worth it IMO. I watch my Blu-rays on a 720p LCD and there's a HUGE difference.
