Hey folks,
I am in the process of looking for a new plasma and the display that I have my eye on has a native resolution of 720p. Newer 1080p versions will be coming out in the next month or so but will be $1100+ more then these existing models. With that said, I am curious to know how Blu-Ray content looks on a 720P set. I have seen Blu-Ray several times on 1080P screens and the content looks phenomenal, unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to see the same content played on a 720p set. With a viewing distance of over 7ft on a 50" screen, how much of a difference are we talking in terms of quality with a Blu-Ray feed going into a screen with a native resolution of 1365 x 768 vs 1920 x 1080. Thanks! Dave |

I'm very interested in this Sammy because I am also willing to get a new full hd tv (to replace my "old" Panny TH42PV500 and according to the review I mentioned it can handle p24 input and "judder was significantly reduced". Also the color reproduction seems to be quite ok. I just wish there was some B&M around here to have it on show ![]() Edit: German price includes VAT(sales tax) 19% Last edited by TimppaK; 07-27-2007 at 07:05 PM. |

I just purchased a 50" Pioneer Kuro Flat Panel Television. I am pretty hardcore when it comes to getting some of the best electronics, this tv just being one of them. My blu-ray player (PS3) is aweseme on this tv. I have seen this 720p right next to many other 720p and 1080p models of all different brands. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST TV's I HAVE EVER SEEN. The blu-ray discs on 720p compared to 1080p is only slight. If you are really into graphics and details (like i am) you can spot the difference on side by side comparison... which i did with many models. With a 50" screen i wouldnt worry too much about the 720p vs 1080p. The 720p will be awesome... i can tell you from experience. BUT.. if you did decide to go bigger on the screen you might want to look into the 1080p because the detail is lost the larger you go. From me looking around and doing research 50" is large as i would go without worrying about degredation of the 720p. Once again i have this pioneer and it is awesome.
I hope this helps and good luck finding what ya need... if you have any questions feel free to post again. |

Interesting that you mention 60" because this is what I would be waiting for. The 6010 from Pioneer.

If you go with a 60" it would just depend on how much clarity you would be looking for in the picture. Of course everyone wants the clearest of the clear but 60" is just slightly out of my range for the 720p. Now it just depends on how much money you would like to spend. If you don't care about a little less picture quality (not a WHOLE lot by any means) the 60" 720p would be great. If you are looking for the best clarity then with a 60" inch i would go with 1080p. In my opinion 60" definitely maxes out the screen size that i would buy in 720p. i would go with 1080p for sure if you got wild and went any larger than that. Just my two cents.

Last night I saw a Blu-Ray playing on a 50" 1080p (Pio Elite Pro FHD1) and absolutely loved it. I am just trying to figure out if I would consider a 768P set playing this 1080 content as good as what I saw. BTW, the 768P set that I am referring to is a Pio Kuro. |

I have a 720P JVC HD ILA 61", I guess it's similar technology to Sony's SXRD. Anways, I run it with the BDP-S1 Sony player via HDMI and if the content is good (MI:III, Casino Royale, etc.), I'm not sure how much better it can get. I sit about 12' feet away and the picture is amazing. I'm waiting a couple of years for the 1080P's to drop and then pick up one of those LED Samsungs or maybe a plasma.

I will say that on a small screen, 720 is fine. And both HD formats look much better than SD. However on a large screen (larger than 36" IMO), you can really see the difference between the 2. If you have something as large as 50", I'd say go with 1080 BUT you might want to compare side by side 720 to 1080. if you are happy with 720, go for it, it will save you money. But if you want the best you can get, you should save up for the 1080 system.

If i were you i would stick with the 50" especially if you are viewing the screen from only 7ft. away. Now to the 720 vs 1080... I was in the same dilema as you for so long it kinda got ridiculous. Once i figured out my screen size i was thinking about the same thing as you... what resolution. It is definitley hard to have everything running at 1080p then getting bottle necked at the monitor putting out only 720p. This kept bothering me for quite a while too but after seeing numerous (and i mean numerous) displays side by side... the 1080p just wasn't worth the money (i mean you are looking at a good bit goin' to 1080p) for the only slightly better picture on the 50 inch. If you end up with a 50" the 720p is the way to go. That size and resolution in my opinion is the best combination you can possible go with to get the size you want and the resolution that is still awesome. I mean on most 50" you cant even tell a difference in resolutions if the two screens are even spread out 10 ft apart from each other. Must be side by side to see any difference. You are definitely looking at the right brand though... hope this helps.

Just measured the viewing distance, it is more like 10'. That said I think I am pushing the 1080P viewing distance.
I am better off putting the $$$ towards some quality HiFi and going bigger later if I feel the need. Check out this article. http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/ |

I sit 10' from a 92" screen. (Front projection).
Its 720P and it looks awesome. One thing you may want to base your decision on is how long until you will be able to make another TV purchase? I figured by the time front projectors with 1080P become more affordable that I'd be ready. |

with the posts i have put up if you are going with a 50" screen and sitting 10ft then 720 will be plenty. If you have the money go 1080p no doubt cause obviously its the best from anywhere. If you are on a budget like i was when buying a tv with 50" screen and you are looking pioneer its gonna be good no matter 720 or 1080. If you are looking for the best tv for the best price the 50" pio kuro 720 will be great. who really cares about charts and stuff when you can see for yourself whats best. Just my two cents once again. 720p will be awesome.... 1080p if you got the cash!

I don't think the 1080P 50" was worth the extra $1100, within a year it will be down significantly in price since that is what they will be pushing. That said, moving to 60" 1080P on Pioneer would have cost an extra $2100, which would be great but I can't justify the extra $$$ at the moment. I think I will take the $2100 saved and put it towards some audio equipment. If I feel the need, I will upgrade to 1080P later (or sooner if I am not happy with 768P for some reason). Thank you all for dealing with my indecisions! Dave |

LOL, I forgot to mention. I called Sound Advice today and the rep told me that I need a 1080P native resolution set to watch Blu-Ray, but he said that I could watch HD DVD on a non native 1080P set, for example the 5080.
Amazing! |
