I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. I have not seen this discussed anywhere else (maybe the "What region is it?" thread), so it appears to be an appropiate thread. I will have to do some research into this release, since I would be interested in importing it.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

The special edition DVD has both the US theatrical and the director's cut on it. I don't see why not support both on this too.
However, some issues arise. There are inconsistencies with the director's cut (for example they forgot the color the eyes blue in some of the scenes), and it is not only much longer, it has a different narration as well. I am not sure seamless branching will work with it, it really depends on how much of the film is the same.
I will buy the director's cut the day it comes out, but I will not get the theatrical release.

The TV cut is awful. Edited together by numpties with little knowledge of either editing or films in general. The theatrical version is certainly flawed, but not to the degree of the TV edit.

he TV cut is Only if you've never read the book, in which case the Cliff's notes version that is the theatrical film is unwatchable. The TV cut is something like 40 min longer, and includes many of the important scenes chopped out for the theatrical

Lynch was required to bring it in under 2:20 (that was pretty much a hard limit at the time) to ensure maximum number of shows per day, and never got to participate in the TV cut, so he disowned it. It still doesn't change the fact that it's more faithful to the book, and therefore superior

Only the author of the original work's opinion matters in my book, and that's Frank Herbert, who never voiced a peep of objection (admittedly probably because the check cleared)

I'm a firm believer in books being transferred to screen as verbatim as humanly possible

There's no D U N E director's cut, (well the theatrical is), the extended TV cut wasn't assembled by Lynch, so that's why it says "by Alan Smithee".

A true reconstructed director's cut of D U N E might be the holy grail of SF movies..

yeah I checked website too.
then I checked on fnac website, it is shipped within 24hrs but I don t know if they ship to US or outside europe.
I bought mine at a Fnac in Paris.

concerning interactivity you get (by "my translation")
- adaptation : from the novel to the movie documentary, artworks gallery
- shooting : destination dune, photos gallery
- david lynch : interview, filmography
- cut scenes : photos gallery
- promotion : trailer, film posters, commercial products

agree with you on this. i've always appreciated what lynch tried to do with the complex material.

the sci-fi channel version was even more faithful, but was of such low budget that i found it distracting at times.

now there is apparently a new paramount-backed effort to do yet another version.

frankly, unless they were to spend lord-of-the-rings money and time, i don't see how anyone can bring a faithful representation to the big screen.

That's my suspicion about why it hasn't been released on Blu even though it was announced. Someone realized that the backdrops waving in the breeze is 5x MORE obvious in HD. The SF version was really good, but they had to fire that costume designer. The Reverend Mothra and her cowgirls, and the Sardaukar pastry chefs were ludicrous.

Children of Dune would fare far better (except for that horrible scene on Caladan)

It's frankly impossible to do Dune properly in under 4-5 hours
They'd better include the gladiator scene this time, and the whole Thufir subplot.

Is there an English track on this import? And if so, what audio does it have?

Why does everyone always assume that imports of english language films won't have english?

fear, fear that it won't.
But I am sure it will.

I assume that SciFi still has the rights to the movie for now, like they still have the rights to "Tales of Earthsea". And like Earthsea, SciFi is getting in the way of real talent and real films. We prolly wont see a new movie until SciFi gives up the rights (which I doubt they will) or they expire on their own. That is the reason I can not buy a DVD of "Gedo Senki no Earthsea" (aka Studio Ghibli's "Tales of Earthsea"). Really, really annoying.
If they make a new movie, it will have to be in at least 2 parts. 1 movie really is just too little for this story.

I did not know that the tv cut was not the director's cut, but all I do know is that I have not YET read the books (I have a huge list of book to read and it is on there), and the TV cut makes more sense to me. I assume the general public would feel the same way since most people have not read this book or its many sequels.

I hope this comes to US on Blu anyways, it is a great movie and I still have the tv cut on DVD.

SciFi may have only bought the TV rights to Dune as well. Earthsea was certainly far cheaper to acquire everything to.

You're not missing anything, and nothing is stopping you from grabbing the Japanese/Mainland Asia versions. Worse comes to worse you need to go out and drop $60 on the latest Phillips upconverter that you can hack the region on wit hthe remote

Do yourself a favor and stop after the third one. In fact it's proabably best to stop after the first one, and then watch Children of Dune, because that covers all the good parts of the second 2 books
