Default Very Uneducated With Audio...

just a quick and general question...i honestly have no clue about audio outputs.

my player is a ps3...im running the audio through an optical cable. is this sufficent to support ALL audio?? (lossless, dts-hd, etc.) my reciever is a crappy phillips but it does support 5.1 if that helps. i know, its a newb question. thanks in adavance.

edit: you know what...ill just read this...

no..... unfortunately you won't get the HD codecs.... but given your current system, Optical is your best bet.

It depends on what you mean by "best".

The best in terms of fidelity is, indeed, PCM 2.0.

But if you're talking "best" in terms of surround, you should (assuming your receiver supports it) be able to get DTS 5.1 sound. Any Blu-ray title with DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS-ES, or plain old DTS should play on your system with DTS 5.1 (assuming it was a 5.1 or above mix to start with), which is generally accepted as being a bit better than Dolby Digital.

Dolby Digital, btw, is what you'll get on Dolby TrueHD titles. If you select a PCM 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 track, it will only come out in 2.0, but luckily most (if not all) titles with PCM also include DTS-HD, DolbyTrueHD, or an old lossy codec like DTS or (most commonly) Dolby Digital.
