Default Why don't receivers have a true mono setting

Why don't receivers have a true mono setting, when I set my Pioneer to mono I can hear sound coming out of my left rear speaker.

Because mono does not mean one speaker. When you play in stereo your receiver splits the signal into left channel info and right channel info. When you run in mono there is no split and both channels receive the same info.

Interesting thread. The OP does have a point. I don't think I've seen a "mono/stereo" switch on a receiver or any kind of stereo in about 20 years.

Every now and then, a movie does come out with Dolby Digital 1.0, though (center channel only).

No use for it really (at least not that I can think of) . Unless you happen to be an old school audiophile with a mono turntable setup. I think you can still get mono records, not sure though.

Found this, it"s a good read but doesn't really answer the OP's question:
