Cool Mini Marquee - by Brettallica

Inspired by fellow member Rob71, I decided to build my own custom Blu-ray Disc case holder. I'm calling it the Mini Marquee for now until I can come with something a little more clever.

Here are a couple pictures below, and there are a few more in the gallery. Enjoy!

I originally had planned on going with a gloss black, but once I started putting it together, the finish began to grow on me. Plus, it matches the rest of my furniture. The problem with this wood, though, is that only its top and bottom came with the veneer; I had to add the veneer to the sides of the sheets to hide the inner plies, which was a hassle. To be honest, I'm not happy with the way that came out. Considering this is my first run at this thing, I'll live with it...

I actually have plans for a v.2 already. The next version will be cut from solid wood for ease in milling and to eliminate the veneer issue I mentioned above; it'll have four LEDs in behind the "NOW WATCHING" faceplate so as to light up a little more evenly (although it's not bad now); the pockets that hold the wires will be wider so there's more room for tucking; and the recessed area where the case sits will be a little bit wider (from the front of the case to the back, that is) so a DVD case can fit in there a little better than it does now. A DVD case will fit, but it's snug and I don't like the snugness there.

The "NOW WATCHING" faceplate was cut by a laser. I chose the font Kabel, which is actually one of the fonts used in the game Monopoly. In all caps, I thought it just looked right, as it's great sans-serif font for sure. This marquee actually isn't completely done yet, as I am still going to add the negative space portions of the letters O and A in the faceplate, but this still gives you a good idea.

Some details:
  • 5/8" plywood with some sort of veneer treatment, making it about 3/4" total
  • 6 LEDs (four 3mm and two 5mm) wired with resistors (one resister per LED; i.e. six total)
  • 22 gauge red and black wiring
  • Shrink tubing
  • AAA x 4 battery holder with on/off switch
  • Three screws (holding the upright piece to the base)
  • Endless milling, drilling and soldering!
  • Special thanks to Rob71!
  • Special thanks to Laser Custom Designs, LLC!

Looks good.

But I have to add, HA HA you watched Speed Racer.

I hope you had some glowsticks handy, there were colours in that movie that would blind ravers.

That's absolutely fantastic work Brettalica! Refine it a little more to your wishes and show us the updated version....I might just have to place an order with you for one or two or three.

Oh jadedeath, you so krazy. Actually, Speed Racer is in the marquee because my sons and I watched it Friday; the older one really loves the movie. Make no mistake, though: I like it, too!

Thanks, John. If you're serious about owning one (or two or three) of these, I'd be more than happy to manufacture one (or two or three) for you. I've actually had quite a bit of interest in these to those I've shown. This is the first unveiling to the public, though.

This version has been very well received so far so I really shouldn't push the issue for an updated version, but I know for sure that the next one will be even better. The details won't be as noticeable to those who aren't perfectionists or who really scrutinize the build aspects of a product, but it'll be light years better than this one in my eyes!

Received and replied. Thanks!

I've got a few people interested so far. My original intent was to simply have something cool for my own use, but everyone I've shown either wants one says I should make them and sell them.

Very nice work.

I've actually been looking into a CNC router and a laser cutter. Wow

I would definitely look into selling a few. Just one word of advice: assembly line(well two). Take some orders and then make a few extra, you won't believe the time you can save by doing that. When you take assembly and finishing into account, you could easily make ten or more in roughly the time it takes to make one or two individually.

Great idea. Thanks! I hadn't thought about that method of building before, but it would be very helpful to have two or three at a time prepared for cutting when the milling machine is ready to mill the channels and pockets -- especially on the base piece..

You're going to love your CNC mill. We've got those here at work and they're phenomenal. I use them for miscellaneous personal projects here and there, but didn't use it on this one because the end mills used for this were too large to fit into our CNC mills. We use them to mill other things related to what my company actually does, so I'm very familiar with how they work and can use one to cut just about anything.

Yeah but you non crafty people tend to make good money, so it all works out in the end.

Awesome. Thank you for your feedback. Be sure to PM me when you're done with your HT room!

The new version will actually be better than the one you see in the pics above...if you can believe that...

Thank you. I'm pretty stoked on the way the one you see in this thread came out. I was originally going to do mine in black, but then I got kind of attached to the veneer finish.

They can be made to any color you'd like. A certain Blu-ray.com member (feel free to chime in if you're that user) has requested his in black, and that's how it will be made.

Feel free to PM me about having me make one for you.
