Not sure how this will affect their global sales but I think it's a step in the right direction.

This is great for Blu adoption. Hopefully other studios follow their lead.

As long as they don't continue to jack up MSRP's even more.

This is great. What would be the price point. People could sell the DVd and keep the BD or vice versa.

I liked this on the animation (one for you, the other for the kids room) but I really hope this doesn't spread to the rest of their movies. I'm also not liking the price hike on Up and Monsters Inc.

If they really wanted support Blu adoption they could stagger the release dates for the Blu-ray and DVDs, but that would probably piss off the average consumer. Don't kid yourself, they're just trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of us. Do you know how little it costs to manufacture a DVD and throw it in? And if Up and Monster Inc are any indication they are raising the retail price by $5-$10. I don't remember Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio being hiked up, anybody else?

From a market-penetration point of view, this makes sense for them, to help convert people that are still DVD-only.

But from my point of view, a person who already buys Blu-rays, I'm OK with it provided it doesn't increase the price of their Blu-rays. If it's the case, then I feel I have to pay the price for others not wanting (or being ready to) move to the next format

Didn't HD-DVD used this selling point with the reverse side of the disc being a DVD?

Like others, I'm not very excited to have to pay more simply for the included DVD version.

In the US, you are not paying more.

Disney raised the prices on their BDs so regardless of whether or not it comes with a DVD you are still going to see:

$39.99 MSRP for Catalog titles.

$44.99 MSRP for New to video title.

Oh, and an exception is now set with Hero so if they include at least one new extra on the catalog release then you will see the $44.99 MSRP.

The Canadian MSRP`s are insane now.

$53.99 Cdn for The Hannah Montana Movie
$51.99 Cdn for Witch Mountain
$49.99 Cdn for A Bug`s Life
$45.99 Cdn for Monster`s Inc.

Of course if the included DVD increases the price it will be counterproductive. That could discourage people buying blu-ray. If it is to be at a high price point they should offer both versions, i.e. the blu-ray wit and without DVD.

How can Disney sell blu-rays at these prices. The actual prices should be lot less than these.

Looks like I'm not going to be getting very many Disney releases in the near future.

I don't care (and if they also sold without the DVD (or digital copy), I would get that, but for some I can imagine it is a benefit (i.e. DVD in the car, players, if the kids have DVD in their bedrooms, spare disk if one gets damaged...)

yes, but like you said, they where combos. They where problematic (look at some of the old threads at AVS where people needed to boil the disks in order for them to play), they are much easier to ruin (no safe side) and no graphics.

they are quoting MRSP not sales price, MRSP is always much higher then SP, that is why if you go to Amazon they have stuff like save 30% or 50% off the MRSP and that is their regular price. For example Jimbo had MRSP $51.99 Cdn for Witch Mountain while the price at the store where I bought it was 27.99

27.99 must have been a pretty good deal. It's $32.99 at Best Buy in Canada and most other places. Sure these are MSRP's but the final price is usually directly related to the MSRP (a percentage off of it).

Snow White Blu-ray/DVD is priced at 32.99 Cdn as well.

no regular price at metro video in Montreal (thy don't tend to be like HMV or FS with sales opening day/week), that is why I shop around on the other hand I went into FS the day as well (to help me decide what movies to buy) and they had it for 29.99. I don't usually go to BB just because it is not as convenient (HMV, metro and FS are all a few steps from each other down town)

I agree that MRSP and SP are related but the point is 27.99 or 32.99 or 29.99 are all far from 51.99 so saying "How can Disney sell blu-rays at these prices. The actual prices should be lot less than these." is a bit useless because they won't sell at those prices, no one offers movies at MRSP so you won't pay that.
