Default Blu-rays do have chapters right???

Hey guys,

I'm new to this medium and this forum and have what's probably an easy question.

Do Blu-ray discs have chapter menu's like DVD's or have those been eliminated for some reason? I ask because I've bought 2 blu rays so far (Fringe season 1 and *Dollhouse season 1 sets) and I have not been able to navigate to any sort of episode chapter menu in either set. All I can do is start the episode then skip forward. I have probably 400 or so DVD's and have not ran into this unless it was a real real cheapo release.

*Dollhouse didn't even have a printed episode sheet included. Pretty cheap of them considering the cost of the set.

Is this a common thing for Blu-ray discs or am I missing something? I can't believe I'm missing finding chapter menu's as I've looked high and low. It can't be that freakin' difficult to navigate through a disc!

If so that's two strikes in my mind to blu rays as they currently are. 1) I like having chapters menu's and 2) even though I've rarely used it in the past NOT being able to reverse slo-mo seems to be a step backwards.

thanks in advance for any help,
lastdj

I don't have either of those Blu-Ray sets so I can't comment on their chapter modes, however any of the Blu-Rays that I have watched and tried to open a chapter menu has had them. Most even have them as a pop-up menu option so you don't even have to go out of the movie to see the different chapters available.

Not being able to go backwards in slow-mo sounds like a player option rather than a limitation of Blu-rays, I can do it just fine on my PS3.

Your Strike 2 is a player issue not a BD issue, on chapters IDK about those Blu-rays but all other ones I have, have them. Maybe your not on the right menu??

Most Blu-rays have chapter marks, but you came across a Warner disc in Fringe. They have eliminated chapters on their television releases. It is an awful decision by them, but you will soon learn other negatives of Warner releases.

thanks guys,

good to hear it isn't ALL Blu-ray that eliminated chapter menu's. I kinda thought it probably wasn't as that would be something you'd hear talked about on review sites but these being my first two sets it had me wondering. I was just about to look into upgrading the firmware to see if that might have been it - Don't have it hooked into the internet yet. Rather stupid of Warner to think people wouldn't mind not having chapter menu's. The lack of any printed info in Dollhouse on top of it was just dumb of Warner.
At least there was a nice one in Fringe.

Also good to hear it's just my player that won't rewind in slo-mo. Well good and bad. It's the only player I see myself owning for quite some time. At least it's not a feature I use very often at all. Didn't run across that negative in the reviews though: it's a Panasonic DMP-BD60.
