Default Carpet absorbing all bass

Hello all, after having browsed the forums a while, I thought now would be a better time than ever to sign up. I recently received an A2-300, I hooked it up and began playing various music and movies. I've noticed though, it seems like my carpet absorbs all bass from the sub. If I turn it on it's side, so the sub itself is firing forward, i get much greater "punch" to the bass. With it firing down, I can't feel it moving much air at all in my small room. So now I ask, is everyone's downfire like this? What can I do to remedy this?

Maybe you need to put your sub on a riser to create distance between it and the rug.

I agree 100% with what blu titan said. Here is Big Daddy's sticky on the subject.....you can easily make these on your own. My gallery pics show the one I built for my downfiring SVS sub.....

How thick is your carpet? How much room is inbetween the woofer and the carpet?

To test out if a riser is need and your problem, buying these is about the cheapest you can go with raising your sub and giving it space inbetween the woofer and carpet. I got mine from Home Depot.

Depending how thick your carpet is, you may have to double up on them.

As for room between the sub and the carpet, there well, isn't any per say. I've been reading up on risers, I just didn't know if It would help give the bass more kick.

One reason I like our 12" Powered & Slave Forward firing Subs

I have about 2in inbetween the woofer and the carpet. I have hardwood floors, but I place a small carpet under my subs to stop them from dancing.

When I added the carpet I then started reading about risers, I was happy with how mine sounded and just decided to try out the little spacers to give a little more room.

Yeah,

For the Subwoofer to "push" the air around it to create the Bass, there needs to be room between it and the floor/carpet.

Did the sub you have come with any instructions on how to properly install it?

I take that as the rug is thick and the sub is almost on the rug, hence there doesn't sound like there is any air to move. Test it -- Get two pieces of wood maybe 2x4's and place the sub on top of them such that the driver is clear. You should hear a huge difference right away. Good luck.

Take care also that while the sub is in the downward firing orientation, that the driver isn't coming in direct contact with the carpet. If this is interfering with the driver's travel it could damage your sub.

You do have the feet installed on your sub, right?

A lot of assumption in here that it IS the carpet. I know you said it sounded better/hit harder on its side- but have you tried placement elsewhere in the room? Front-firing vs. down-firing characteristics aside, this could just be a null/standing wave issue from bad placement. I wouldn't necessarily run out and buy a bunch of junk before testing placement.

oh, i thought i posted here already.

anyways, its also a matter of placement. if ever you wont benefit the most out of your subwoofer if you dont properly place it in the room.

in regards to 'air flow' what you might be pressure. that normally occurs when you have a smaller more enclosed space. as always, a good subwoofer and placement is in order to accomplish such.

right when i was about to say something...

anyways, i guess you got two votes for subwoofer placement first.

If he doesn't have any clearance like he stated, then it's not going to sound right no matter where he places it.

I found these. Do you have the spike or hourglass?

You would hear a huge difference if you just put a pice of plywood between the Sub and carpet.

I'm using the spikes for feet, and they simply sink into the carpeting. I threw some hard-cover books under the sub to give it clearance, and there is definitely an improvement in bass. I do believe I will try to get a riser built sometime this week.

Sounds like a good plan. Subs need room to push the air in order to produce Bass. You will be much happier after giving it the space to please you ...

Sort of like a wife...but that is a whole other technology

That was a good idea and here I am telling you to go buy something just to test it out.... duh!!! silly me...

Since you have that thick carpet, I would build it kinda tall. Just don't go over 2 feet, I believe that is something I read and about 1 1/2 - 2 inches between the woofer and riser.
