Default PS3 on carpet okay?

Vertical, is there any reason it can't sit directly on the carpet?

You know, honestly I would try to avoid it if possible. Lots of stuff can get stuck into the carpet fibers like hair, lint, dust, etc. The PS3 is a dust magnet in general, but why support it, ya know?

But hey, the system will be blowing air out straight up horizontally, so you may be Ok. I just wouldn't do it personally. To much $$$ for one.

I agree...don't put it on the carpet. It should just feel wrong anyway.

I wouldn't do this ... as mentioned already, dust is the big worry. Also vibrations from the floor could transfer too easily (a bad idea for a spinning hard disk).

DON'T DO IT!!! Walking on a carpet can create a static discharge from across the room! Put some sort of wood or rubber piece underneath it. Otherwise, you might as well balance the unit on a thin 6' dowling over a concrete surface... it would be less likely to get damaged!

i've got my ps3 sitting on the carpet, but i made a custom ps3 "coaster" out of some corrugated plastic stuff so it doesn't actually contact the carpet and is kept safe from static electricity.

ps3 on carpet would be unstable. and yes, as somebody said, static electricity. I have repaired my laptop several times, and it is best not to sit and put your laptop on a carpet.

Dang, I didn't even think about static elec. I was thinking about the ventilation.

About 3 months ago when I moved it out of the cabinet and set it on the floor I put it on a spare ceramic tail ~11"x11". The tile works great but it looks stupid as hell. This is in our living room. The PS3 would look awesome on top of my black subwoofer but I'm thinking that probably wouldn't work out too good.

I guess we'll have to look for some sort of small table or something.

ventilation, if you put it in approved position (meaning there is a rubber pad on the side that you're going to put as the bottom), it should be fine. the ventilation is on the right side of PS3 and behind (where all the cable connection is)

but definitely, don't put it on carpet

Get a piece of laminated board. Lowes might have two foot square pieces which you can cut down to size. If you have enough scrap to make two small strip pieces; two inches high, five inches long and one-half inch wide; fastened down to the board and acting as clamps or bookends to keep your PS3 stable on your board floating on the carpet.

Oh and paint the board and the "clamps" black.

You can also buy those little anti-static mats that are sold almost anywhere that sells computer accessories.
