Was hoping for some helpful recommendations on my very 1st addition/upgrade to a separate 2 channel amp to drive PA Monitor 70 fronts.
Have Onkyo TX-SR705 (Advertised 100w/channel) (2) Monitor 70 Fronts (Recommended 20-275w amp power) CS1 Center (4) Monitor 30 Surrounds Klipsch Synergy Sub 12 If there is something in the range of $300 or less that you would recommend, please let me know. |

Howdy, for your price range and for your first I don't think you will go wrong with the Emotiva UPA-2 amp. it's a true amp and will give you all of the 125wpc, I doubt that most receivers give their true rated wpc given. it will do so effieciently and will remain cool to the touch. I have the XPA-5 and it runs incredibly cool. I am going to buy the UPA-2 myself later this year when I get a pre-pro and go completely seperate; I'll use the UPA-2 for my surround back 2 channels. I do think you will be very happy with it to drive your front 2 for stereo. As an alternate, since you will probably be using this setup for your HT use, watching movies, I would recommend getting the XPA-3 instead of the UPA-2 that way you put power into all 3 of your fronts where for HT use is where you really need it and power your 4 surronds from your receiver.
I hope this helps, here's a link to Emotiva, check out the recommended amps! Good Luck! http://emotiva.com/erc1_feature.shtm |

+1 on the UPA or XPA suggestion. I am currently running a UPA-7 and am VERY happy with it. Depending on where your budget falls in, and of the three would probably fit the bill nicely in one form or another.

used is a good way to go if you want to save some $$$. adcom, nad, rotel come to mind in the used market. another option to consider maybe would be a behringer a500(it puts out about 160w or so into 8ohms). you could also bridge it into something like 320 watts into 1 channel, so if you want extreme overkill you could buy 2(about $179 a pop new) for each speaker...
some people don't like behringer, but for that cheap i'm tempted...all in all, if you're set on spending around $300. i think your best bet is the emotiva upa-2... |
