Default Microsoft Looks to Grow HD DVD Title Catalog

Quote:
Microsoft is beginning to throw its weight around in the HD DVD/Blu-ray battle, announcing Monday it had teamed with Amazon.com to bring independent films to the format.

The two companies provide the filmmakers of up to 1,000 titles free authoring and setup services to allow their movies to be distributed in HD DVD. The service will be spearheaded by CustomFlix, an Amazon company.

I personally don't think this is a big deal. I am rarely interested in indi films.

Nothing brings new people to a format quite like releasing movies people have never heard of.

LOL, HD-DVD sold, what, a couple thousand copies of Casablanca? I'm sure everyone is going to be rushing out for "The Secret Life of My Doggie Rex" on HD-DVD.

I wonder what direction they are headed in...

they were known for releasing movies that people haven't heard of in awhile...

now it's just plain old..."what?..I never even heard of that!"

Pretty much the only people who will be buying this will be like relatives of the Director. I can just see it now. Amazon.com Sales Rank: #78,579 in DVD. Do they think this will really help?

Shouldn't Micro$oft finish their "version" of the iPhone first?

For some reason (and even though I could care less about indie films) this news really pisses me off. But I am not pissed off because of Micro$oft, I am pissed off because of Amazon's involvement. For some reason I feel betrayed by Amazon because I am a very loyal customer. If they are not going to support both formats then they should stay out of the fight (remain neutral).

I may consider taking my business elsewhere.

I take every move made by the HD-DVD side seriously.

It's one of the reasons that I haven't gotten anything yet in HD.

I really hate this format war, for the obvious reason of its nature.

I have seen a lot more bad attitudes from the HD-DVD side towards Blu-Ray supporters. I didn't even know about Blu-Ray until about a year ago. I weighed the options, and though Blu-Ray players don't have Dolby Digital Plus, and TrueHD as mandatory, I would push for the later models in the next year to have them as mandatory for factory design. The fact that Smallville Season 6 will be not only in HD-DVD this time, but also in Blu-Ray with requiring one less disc to fully compose the set is one of the reasons why I think Blu-Ray is more cost effective in the long run. With it's abilities pushed further, with dual layer discs, and uncompressed audio, TV shows would benefit the most from the format. Using Blu-Ray with all it's potential would make the TV show sets more profitable, and that is one of the biggest reasons I support Blu-Ray.

Microsoft sees the cost advantage in HD-DVD, but from my perspective, even with the mandatory audio requirements, it has too many limitations.

Anyone else have their thoughts on this?

Like you said, i don't think this is really going to affect HD-DVD sales that much (I mean how many indie films do you own? Especially compared to studio films), but it does concern me and i am annoying at Amazon for sticking it's nose into the battle like this. I am sure that Blu-ray will win out, but this is only going to make this last so much longer.
Microsoft is evil.
Personally I don't see what the issue is with these "mandatory" features. First off, all HD-DVD players HAVE to have internet, so how are you suppose to have a portable player if it has to be online? Also, all these mandatory features are currently all offered on Blu-ray players, whether or not they are utilized by the discs.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the players or the format, but there is a lot of false information out there that will only go to further confuse people.

Who cares?
I am not against the Indies movies, and I think they should benefit from the Hi-Def technology. But you think if their format was so good they (M$) would have been interested in those Indie films? that soon?
Another reason why normal people should stay away from this format.
Next they will start asking for "home videos" that you, me & the rest have made, to master them in HD-DeaD. Desperation! Desperation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that happen I won't be able to support those studios, since I will never hold a red case in my hands.

They had to do something. Universal is running out of movies to support HD-DVD.

Just a theory but I think this story could have enourmous implications.

Blu was hurried onto the market after HD-DVD came along. This same thing is now happening to M$'s effort for a downloadable HD market. M$ may now realize they either get it going now or it will be too late.

Am I the one one thinking the best application for this is porno movies?
