Hong Kong The Last Samurai - Hong Kong

Released by Deltamac - Warner

Quote:
Video: 1080p VC-1
Audio: English TrueHD 5.1, English DD 5.1**
Subtitles: English Subtitles, English Subtitles for Japanese Language Parts**
Aspect Ratio: 2:40:1
Region: Free
Size: BD50
**For other audio and subtitles, see picture

The disc defaults to the English TrueHD 5.1 track and English Subs ONLY on the Japanese parts (also the 26th Subtitle track). The subs are player generated and not theatrical style. They are presented in the black bars. The AQ is quite a nice upgrade. The PQ is no different from the current versions. This is most likely a port of the Swedish HD-DVD.

It does sound like the disc automatically turns on the English subs for only the Japanese portions.

The default subtitle track is number 26, which is English only for the parts where Japanese is spoken.

The Last Samurai at Play-Asia.com

The film has the majority of English and also characters speaking in Japanese. The Japanese characters are occasionally subtitled more as the stand-point of Nathan Algrens character.
I own this on HDDVD and will purchase this on Blu with the TrueHD track.

So apparently the Korean and Hong Kong versions are True HD. How about he Japanese version? I tried AsianBlurayguide.com and they don't even have The Last Samurai in their database apparently. Also tried Amazon.jp English site and it doesn't identify the audio.

The Japanese version only has English DD 5.1.

Hmm.

Just curious: Does anyone own both the American and Hong Kong BDs? If you do, how much do they differ in terms of picture and audio quality?

I am only asking this because I've been holding off on purchasing this BD until I could get my hands on a copy with a lossless audio mix.

PQ is identical. AQ is a very nice upgrade.

The Russian and Mainland China versions have it as well. I think the Czech one does as well. Those and the HK and Korean versions are the only one I know of that have the track.

Has anyone done a A/B comparison of the US lossy track vs the HK/Korea lossless track?

Does either the Korean or HK release have the title of the movie on the disc (I know a lot of imports from those regions don't).

13 years later, I'm curious for this. Turns out there's still stock availability via YesAsia.com, albeit increased from $24.99 USD to $29.99, before shipping (FREE over a certain amount but I can't afford the upper limit required for free shipping and before currency conversion). So I need to really know this is a big leap of quality, not modest. I'd especially kick myself if they suddenly announced a 4K remaster with a new lossless mix after buying this ... but I love this movie at the same time.

Yeah, I'm at a point now if the studios want my money, release 4K HDR with lossless audio.
