Default BestBuy gave me a slim PS3 free, but it keeps overheating...(inside glass cabinet)

my old 80GB PS3 stopped playing discs(DVD, CD, Blu-ray) because it would not allow discs to be inserted. The mechanism probably just died.

I went to the local BestBuy and they gave me a new slim PS3 under the 2-yr replacement plan. I was a little sad, because the my old 80GB PS3 was the last PS3 with SACD-playback capability... but oh well...

I hooked up the slim PS3 and placed in the same glass cabinet as the old PS3, in the same orientation. The cabinet is not ventilated, except for a baseball-size hole which allows cables to go in and out... For more than 1 year, the old PS3 never had a problem inside, even with daily use.

After two days, the slim PS3 kept shutting down due to heating problem. if I leave the cabinet door completely open, then it doesn't do it.

Before I go back to BestBuy, I'd like to know if I might have gotten a slim PS3 with defective fans? Or is this just normal? The reason I'm asking is that unlike the old PS3, the slim PS3 made no sound at all.... none that I could hear from sitting 2 feet away. The old PS3's fan was loud enough to be heard, even inside the cabinet....

Thanks!

You might want to look into getting some more ventilation in the cabinet...with all the gear in there running at the same time the heat builds up and with no place to go its going to start affecting things..

From what I understand, is the old PS3 relied more on active cooling (fans), while the new PS3 relies more on passive (heatsinks with a smaller fan) cooling.

With more air movement from the old PS3, it might have created enough airflow in your cabinet to properly cool it, while the new PS3 does not. Just cut a larger hole in the back, or get a quiet 12V 120mm fan with a 120V power supply.

You should see about installing a fan kit into your media cabinet. I've got this kit and it works great at keeping things cool.

I have an enclosed cabinet as well, and my components would get so hot you could almost burn your hand on them... I installed fans to draw the heat out and it allowed me to keep the doors closed... Very easy to install... I bought mine from coolerguys.com and they've been working great...

Here is an older picture but you get the idea...

The Slim gets hot as a mother, but as long as it has room to breathe, it cools down over the time you use it/watch stuff on it.

I never used the glass front door to my gear rack.

It's open front and back and I only use as many shelves as I need and give everything as much space as possible.

Also,... basements here are approx 50 degrees year round so that must help a bit too.

I can't imagine putting a PS3 or AVR into a closed cabinet with just a hole in the back for the cables. Sounds like more of your stuff should be broken by now.

The vents on the slim and old ps3 are in a different location. The slim vents only through the back, the old ps3 vents at lots of various locations and mainly from the right side. Also, open up more space or put a fan where the hole is.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. Turn the Slim upside down and you will see vents all along the unit on the underneath side of the edges.

I took the slim PS3 to my basement and plugged it in....
it made absolutely no noise at all, even when I held it
up against my ear.... except some hard drive noise...
it made about as much noise as my iPod Classic 160GB....

is the slim PS3 completely air-cooled without any fans?

What it all boils down to is that you need more vents in the cabinet, having a hole just to pass the wires thru just isn't enough...

Slightly off topic....

At least yours is only shutting down from time to time. My slim died completely this morning. Won't turn on at all. Luckily I was within my 30 day return period so I brought it back and just told them I'm not completely satisfied....which technically was true.

Now I'm without a BluRay player until I figure out what to get.....

Yeah, exactly. All the PS3 cooming fan is doing is moving hot air out and hot air in.

Reviewers have commented that the PS3 slim has the biggest cooling fan they have ever seen in a consumer device.

I have my slim here, and the only place where air is coming out is from the back.

I'm sorry about your old 80 gig If i was in your place I would have sent it to Sony and ate the 150 bucks or see if you could have back charged Best buy for the replacement. Oh well like everyone else's opinion you need more airflow.
