Default Grotesque Is Too Grotesque for Viewers.

Hey,

Thought this would be an interesting article about the 'Grotesque'. The Movie was too gruesome that it received a ban from showing in UK. Never heard of a movie too gruesome in comparison than Saw or even Ichi The Killer.

Quote:
Apparently the British Board of Film Classification shares in some of our readers who believe that the Japanese horror film “Grotesque” is just that — too grotesque for moviegoers. (You can read our review of “Grotesque”, and the current ongoing argument in the comments section here.) According to the Daily Mail, the BBFC has declined to give “Grotesque” the Certificate 18 it was seeking, effectively banning the film in the UK under the explanation that it may constitute a “risk of harm” to viewers.
The decision is a rare one, and comes from the BBFC’s director David Cooke, who said this:
“Unlike other recent torture-themed horror works, such as the Saw and Hostel series, Grotesque features minimal narrative or character development and presents the audience with little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism. The chief pleasure on offer seems to be in the spectacle of sadism (including sexual sadism) for its own sake. Rejecting a work outright is a serious matter and the board considered whether the issue could be dealt with through cuts. However, given the unacceptable content featured throughout cutting the work is not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification.”
The last film to be rejected by the BBFC was 2004’s “Murder Set Pieces”, which we also reviewed here. Gee, I hope this isn’t some kind of pattern…
Outright denial of a certificate by the BBFC means that the film can no longer be sold within UK limits, although I’m not sure how this effects online distribution of the film, as I still see the movie being sold on sites like Play.com and hmv.com, both UK-based DVD suppliers.
Enjoy.

Crazy little Japanese men, the kind who dream about 12 year old girls when they go to bed. Banning this movie just means I HAVE to see it, gotta find out what's so bad about it .

Yesasia.com has the Japanese Unrated Version for $42. They say the UK version will come out in a month ($25). Doesn't say what format the Japanese one is, but the UK is PAL format only. And both are region 2. Don't know if they will be on BD

I am guessing the Chainsaw in the poster. It makes me question Saw, was banned in the UK?

You can watch the trailer to get an idea. Trailer (NSFW)

After watching the trailer, I can understand why they would not give it a classification. Especially when they say it has "minimal narrative or character development and presents the audience with little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism." This quote is of interest, " However, given the unacceptable content featured throughout, cutting the work is not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification." Basically they are saying that it can't be re-worked to be able to be classified.

TBH if you're going to allow movies in your country, you should allow them all, regardless of content, unless the content of that movie is offensive to your COUNTRY and not just to your sensibilities.

The English behaviors when it comes to movies and games are erratic in IMO. like you said they should just allow it to be released. I am glad to be an American (hoping MPAA doesn't follow the british footsteps on this.)

Umm... no.

I don't even regard this kind of crap as a movie. You have to be pretty sick to direct, write, act or watch these disgusting "movies" that the Japanese and French are spewing out.

I'm glad it's banned and wish more were, like Martyrs.

I take strong exception to your desire to impose your artistic standards on other adults. If this isn't your type of movie, that's fine; but wishing to ban movies simply because you don't like them is an untenable position.

I think the movie Transformers is an atrocious blight on the medium due to the extreme ineptitude of the composition and editing of the action scenes, but I would never wish to prevent those interested in seeing it from doing so.

Even though I disagree with you, I still dig your avatar.

I disagree...because then where does the banning of movies stop? Does it stop at extreme violence? extreme sexual content? unsimulated sexual activity? too much profanity?

And then what will happen is that films will just be chopped to pieces by countries so they can deem it "appropriate" for their viewers. I feel that I should be the judge of what I can and cannot watch, not my place of residence.

EDIT: I have to add that this is what bugs me about production studios who cut up foreign or domestic films to make it less of a "bad taste" to the public. A perfect example is the final scene in Drunken Master II when Jackie Chan gives that weird facial expression at the end of the movie to show that he has become mentally handicapped due to the drinking of industrial alcohol. It was cut from the U.S. release because it was deemed "bad taste" in America, even though it was supposed to be a funny scene.
