When I first got into this stuff I just bought a nice speaker set and then a reciever that matched up nicely too it.

I have upgraded my reciever, fronts and center since that time but really it was a good start.

I still use the SUB and 4 of the original satelites for 7.1.

You can look at the Onkyo HTiB range.
Very good value for money. If you can stretch your budget to about $500, you can go for Onkyo HT-S6100. It is a receiver based HTiB, so should suit your needs.
Alternatively, they have a cheaper option HT-S3200, but not sure if it would serve your purpose of decoding PCM.

Definitely worth checking out though..

Cheers,
AK

I just bought this RCA one. It is 1000 watts total with the optical in which i will just connect to my tv and whatever my tv sees is what will play surround. Well see how it goes.

As someone who has family that work(ed) for Thomson Consumer Electronics as a major salesperson, take back the RCA. They simply don't have quality equipment any longer. I had a ton of RCA equipment in my house- DVD, TV, HTiB, and they were all pretty much junk.

(Thomson CE is the umbrella over RCA and GE, in case you weren't aware.)

Oh really. What about phillips?? Also as I asked above I only have like 200-250 to spend and I actually got the rca unit on sale for 149. it came with 5 speakers and a sub woofer and its a reciever not dvd which is what i wanted and it has an optical input. Anyway I dont know about the decoding stuff and also it is 5.1.

Well, I own a Philips TV and am looking to upgrade it soon. I don't think Philips is probably much different than RCA, honestly. If you're happy with it, that's all that matters but honestly don't expect it to last more than a year or two. We had two DVD players from them go bad in a year or less, a 5.1 system that was always a bit flaky, and a few tube TV's and then HDTV's (the discount was so tempting) that were never that great.

I don't like to badmouth a company but I take exception with Thomson/RCA.

You should take that system back and save up you're money for something better. I know you want something now but trust me you will regret wasting even $150.00 on that RCA later on. If you have a top of the line TV why skimp on the audio? In my opinion brands like RCA, GE, Phillips, Insignia all should be avoided. Stick with known brands like Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha, Sony, Samsung, LG and even Panasonic for those budget HTIB systems. Before you buy any system research it. Check reviews, read user comments. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=109

Does it matter if i get one with a dvd player instead of a reciever?? I mean i wont use the dvd player because i use my PS3 obviously. But is there any difference between the reciever and dvd player to play my blurays on my PS3 on my TV?? Thats another reason I bought the RCA was it came with a reciever instead of a dvd player.

No RCA system that I know of can decode HD audio. I'm sure that yours cannot as well. To be honest, you'll be hard-pressed to find one at that price-point. However, with the PS3, you don't need one to decode. You just have to have one that accepts HDMI audio, and the PS3 will dedcode them. Just needs to state it has an HDMI repeater- not passthrough.

Honestly, I agree with this. I don't like to tell people to spend more than their budget but it's good advice.

Ok so how would I hook it up. Because the reciever or dvd player will have only one optical input and I would run that to my tv so that whatever my tv saw is what sound would come out. How would i make it so that the PS3 hdmi audio would also comeout of the dvd /reciever? Or would it come through automatically as long as the system has hdmi repeater. man just tryin to figure this out.

I would go PS3 optical to the receiver. If it only has one optical input (bet it does) I would see if you can go digital coax from the TV to the receiver. If you go PS3 -> TV -> receiver, it's going to downmix everything to stereo instead of 5.1 Dolby Digital or whatever.
