Default Another speaker suggestion and placement thread...

In advance, I'd like to apologize for my horrific computer skills and drawings.

Background:

I recently purchased my first home... (hold on a second, ) and was thinking about where I would like to put my speakers and subwoofer.

As far as speakers are concerned, I currently own a pair of Paradigm Monitor 7's and a CC-290 center channel.

I'm also in the process of purchasing a SVS PC12-NSD because of its small footprint.

Living room size 18'X22' with 9' ceilings

Questions:

For the back speakers Paradigm suggestions ADP-390's for surrounds, but I'm not sure if they will work in this room. What do you think? (Pictures below)

The back wall is already wired for speakers, but the only speaker that would fit up there would be the atoms. Do you think I would need a bigger speaker?

If so, then I also thought about running the Titans on speaker stands behind the sofa.

Which speaker do you suggest and placement?
How many feet will there need to be behind the couch for your placement suggestion?
Is it really that important that speakers be at ear level?
Any other suggestions for subwoofer placement?

Also, how could I ever run 7.1 in a room with an open wall? The room next to it is the kitchen.

Yes, that is a SVS by the door.

Big box - couch.
Speaker in the corner - Paradigm Atom
Speaker on the stand - Paradigm Titan
Speakers on the back walls - Paradigm ADP-390

If you need better pictures I can see if I can get inside again, otherwise I should have the keys by the 25th.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Congratz on the home purchase (I just bought my first in November 08)!

If you go 5.1 you need the surrounds on the sides. They can work ok behind, but it isn't the proper placement. I have mine behind for now because I need to figure out how to run in wall speaker wire before mounting them on the sides. Is there room on each side of the couch for speakers on stands?

Once you figure out the side surrounds I don't see any reason you couldn't go 7.1 with two rear surrounds on the wall behind the couch.

He just has a drawing of where his "future" sub will go. So, you aren't missing out on the sub pic yet.

imo i would rather place your tv and speakers on the last picture -where it seems like you are wanting to put your back and surround speakers

Don't put all four of your rear speakers on the same wall. The two rear speaker placement looks fine, but bring your side surround out more.

Right, but, I'm not sure what speaker I should run and where at. For example, do I buy the Titans and put them behind the couch or run the atoms up high.

On top of that, which speaker would work best. I haven't purchased any of them yet.

It doesn't seem like I can run the ADPs because there isn't another wall, its the kitchen. Although, If you look on the left side of the back wall there is space where I could put a ADP, but I'm not sure if that would be a good spot.

Thanks, I am so excited to move in! I have been living in an apartment the last 5 years going to college with very sensitive neighbors. It's time to crank it up!

Ok, what if I did the ADP's like I have pictured above? The left side of the wall has space for them. What do you think? I wouldn't be able to drop them down to ear level, but if I bought the atoms they were going to be at the same height.

Also, if I was to go ADP's over Atoms or Titans, do you think I should go with the 390's or 190's. I know that Paradigm suggests the 390's, but I'm not sure.

Thanks again.

How much space is there? I have mine at four feet out, sometimes I wish I went another foot.

Actually that chair is agaist the wall under the speakers.

Here is a thread when people talked about how high the speakers should be

This is what I would do also. You've got alot more room for a wider soundstage, display and components.

That's a lovely looking room Blu-man.

I second this. Not sure if there is anyone else's opinion you need to consult with, but turn the room around and you will probably have a better set up for your front sound stage, which is more important IMO.

I agree the rear would make for a larger TV and much better sound stage, but from the looks of it, Its already wired for they way he is asking.

I agree, it does look better using the back wall, but then I have to think about speaker placement on the front wall, which seems difficult.

Oh, and there might be a slight issue with...oh, I don't know, a 4' X 9' hole in the wall.
I guess I could just cover it up and finish it....YIKES!

I don't know the exact measurement, but I'm guessing its probably 3'-4' feet just by looking at it. I might be able to go by the house today and give an exact measurement.

I'm just wondering, looking at the fireplace, are you not concerned that the heat will damage your equipment if you place everything right next to it?

Also, my tv is only 40" and the stand is 46" if its on that back wall it might look small??????? The front living room measures perfect for both, which is why I was leaning that way.

I will admit though, it seems like a lot of stuff in a small area.

No you don't have to do that, I was just trying to give you an idea.

Well like the rest of the guys were saying, having that wide area for your front sound stage is better then the one you are considering.

I was guessing you wanted it this way, because of current wiring and maybe the fireplace setting. If you really have a good option for the reverse, I would do that. Then again, your rear speaker placement will be odd.

The speaker placement would be odd in the front rom.

Another reason why I wanted the back wall was to be able to run the Paradigm ADP-390's possibly on that 3'-4' section and then of course on the other side with the sofa in between.

Yikes indeedy ! If you did consider using the larger wall for your display, have you considered mounting your sides/rears on the ceiling angled downwards ? I reckon it could look dope.

That's the problem. How can I mount them if there isn't a wall on the side?

That's one of the reasons why I needed that back wall. In the left corner of the room there is about 3-4' that sticks out which allows me to mount and angle a speaker or mount a ADP-390. Of course the other side would have the matching speaker because there is a wall there.

The front room won't allow that because the kitchen is next door. Unless I use speaker stands
