Default PS3 for Blu-ray vs Blu-ray player

Would you say that the blu-ray player in the PS3 is as good as any other blu-ray player (say in the 200.00-250.00 price range)

I would say pretty much yes and it's a gaming machine with internet browser. Even if you don't use that it's still like the easier player to do system updates and BD-Java movies load pretty fast on it

This is just my opinion......
No. I have a PS3 and it seems like the PQ on my BDP-51 is much better.
As with anything, I'm sure the model in question will have an impact on the answer.

These two responses sum it all up. Those that see the PS3 as a capable Blu-ray player and those that do not. If you do a little searching on this site, you will find that this is a subject that has literally been beat to death, buried, dug up, and beat some more.

Although I personally fall into the camp that supports PS3 as a Blu-ray player, there are many others who do not.

Thats why I said it was just my opinion.
Another plus for me is that my PS3 gets very loud. While gaming it doesn't bother me, but during a movie its distracting at times.

This is my opinion also,

No, I use my S360 because it is quieter, uses less power, stays cool and also the PQ seems to be better on my standalone also.

But I use my PS3 as a secondary blu payer. Still a great player nontheless!!

Only you can answer this question, connect a PS3 and a standalone player to the same TV, play the same movie on both players and decide which on looks the best for you.

Some people will say the PQ of the PS3 is better other will say the PQ of the stand alone player is better and then you will get those who will claim the one looks better then the other allthough both looks the same to them.

I had a 60gb ps3 it does making noise time to time.
I brought oppo to replace blu-ray for ps3 because is total quiet and use far less energy and is as fast as ps3 in term of loading speed.

I surprise that some picture in comparison it seems oppo did better than ps3 especially in picture that has noise and older blu-ray and dvd of course. But ps3 has wifi support build it and show audio data bit rate. The new slim should be a improvement especially it can decorde now, and less energy etc..

only problem is that the oppo is about twice that of his price range.

PS3 is reputable, well loved great machine with excellent PQ. Probably blu-ray PQ is very close to (if not match) high end players like Oppo. I expect DVD upscaling is not the best in PS3.

The new PS3 slim is not that bad for noise at all. I bought one to replace my Pioneer 51FD, and I'm happy with what I've got. The PS3 loads fast, has wireless for BD-Live, and the slim will bitstream as well, giving me the same audio I had with the 51FD. The picture quality is a little different, as the 51FD seemed to have a little more vibrant color output, but it's not anything that detracts from the presentation on the PS3.

Overall the PS3 is just as good a player as the latest crop of players from other companies. It's really up to you to decide whether you feel comfortable using a gaming console as your player, or whether you would prefer a stand-alone.

1) PS3's are completely quiet unless you have an ancient version from years ago.

2) Audio output is 100% identical to any other player since the player's have no roll in the sound quality, they just sent the signal to the receiver and lossless is lossless.. doesn't matter if the player or the receiver does the unzipping (so to say) and the Slim can do either.

3) Picture Quality is going to be very close.. maybe minor improvement with the Oppo at twice the price of a PS3 but not worth it in my opinon unless you have a lot of money and don't care about other options the OPPO doesn't give you that the PS3 does.

4) PS3 gives you games of course but more important is the fact that you can stream audio/pictures/video to it from a PC, from its hard drive, or a usb drive. Streaming is something the way more expensive OPPO can't do and at twice the price you would think it would.

Overall it is hard to beat the PS3's abiltiies and price.. you can go cheaper with cheaper players but you don't get as much either.. is fine if you don't care about the extras the ps3 has.

I have the 40gb PS3 and I've never had a problem with noise. Maybe it is loud, but who's watching movies with the volume so low that you hear the hum of the PS3?

Precisely. I will admit that there are times when a movie ends (read: it is over, hence, no sound) that I hear the hum of the PS3. But the fact of the matter is I enjoy my movies at a decibel level such as the occasional hum doesn't stand a chance of being heard during the movie.

My PS3 is about 2 years old, also a 40gig. I don't always watch movies at a low volume, but some movies are just quiet at times.
My PS3 would get so loud at times it distracted from the movie. It was way more than a "hum".
I know others have models that are silent and others have noisy ones like mine. I just felt that for Blu Ray viewing, I could do better.
For streaming video and gaming, it stays pretty much silent and gets used more than any other system/player I own. Don't want to come off as anti-PS3, just in my case with my unit, I wasn't happy with it as a blu ray player.
