Ok, I know it's happened to a lot of you. You're cruising local ads- Craigslist, ebay, local papers, what have you- and you find that killer deal.

For me, I found a pair of very good condition Polk RTi10's a guy wanted $275 for the pair for here locally. While I wasn't in the market, I jumped at them anyway. I figured I could talk the guy down a little bit or whatever. They had just been put up that day. I emailed the guy and got a response a couple of hours later:

"Sorry dude, they're sold."

...dammit!

OK, I got bored and was looking in some of the old threads....aramis, do you remember this one? Are you happy you got the Def Tech's instead of these Polk RTi10's?

Kind of reminded me of a time about 4 years ago, when I was approached by some guy in a white cargo van... Said he worked for a home theater company and his boss "accidentally ordered an extra pair" of Def Techs (don't remember the model) that he would sell for cash. He said he would take $200 for the pair, but I didn't have any cash, so he called me an a--hole and took off. Those towers could have been mine! Needless to say, I always keep cash on hand now, and with Chase banking, there's always an ATM close-by!

I think you ran into this, probably a good thing you didn't have any cash.

Don't ever buy speakers from guys in a white cargo van. It's a scam and it's a pretty well known one. I had the same thing happen to me and when i asked to see the $1500 "KLIPSCH" he was selling for $250, he proceeded to march out some speaker that said "KLIPTZH" or some such nonsense.

Yeah, they probably would have literally said "Def Tech" instead of Definitive Technology. You probably would've been scammed.

Anyway, ha! I forgot about this thread. I actually listened to some RTi A's about the same time I was considering the Def Techs. It was in an American store (for those of you that don't know- big furniture/electronics retailer). I don't feel like the listening environment was anywhere near as favorable as the room I listened to the DT's in. Even so, I don't think I would've been as happy as I have been with my DT's. I love how even at lower volumes they provide a very open soundstage.

I still scan Craigslist for deals on occasion. I know there were a few guys selling their whole Def Tech setup when the economy tanked. If I hadn't already started on my own I would've snatched them up. Definitely a good place to look for deals.

Thats funny... The wiki breakdown of the scam is EXACTLY how they did it, almost word for word. I knew it was a scam, just thought they were trying to dump some stolen speakers. If I remember correctly, the boxes looked to be real Def Techs, but maybe upon further inspection, they might have been "Definition Technologizer". Guess it was good that I didn't buy them.

I was actually was approached by a guy in a red sports car who asked me if I wanted to buy a surround sound system that was 'accidentally' given to him by his employer and he wanted to sell it to me cheap. I'm sure that was pretty much the same scam just different vehicle. I wanted to punch that guy so badly since I could tell it was a scam.

TENACIOUS D ROCKS

I actually bought speakers from a dude in a white van, I talked him down considerably and the speakers did actually sound pretty good and could handle a lot of power... I was only 16 so it can be forgiven. The ones I got were called Samurai, they were felt covered with a huge 12 in woofer in them along with a mid and tweeter.

Was at Salvation Army a couple weekends ago, over in the corner near the loading dock was a pair of black Klipsch LaScala's with a big pink sold tag on them.

They sold for 60.00 15 minutes before I got there.

It's a bunch of grannies working, I inquired how they calculate the value for stuff like that and they basically price them by size. Small speakers, 2-5 dollars each , medium 10-15 ish each, large 20-30 each.

I picked up a nice pair of Sansui AA-2900's for 20 bucks. Although my HT is all modern gear I have a thing for vintage gear as well.
