Default Horror Remakes: "My Bloody Valentine 3-D," "The Uninvited" and "Friday the 13th"

Hit the below links to check out the trailer for "My Bloody Valentine 3-D," which is a remake of the 1981 film of the same name (minus the '3-D' gimmick), the teaser trailer for "Friday the 13th" which is a remake of the 1980 film and the trailer for "The Uninvited" which is a loose remake of the 2003 Korean film "A Tale of Two Sisters."

"My Bloody Valentine 3-D" (January 16, 2009)

"The Uninvited" (January 30, 2009)

"Friday the 13th" (February 13, 2009)

Wouldn't it be shame if somebody in Hollywood had an original idea for a horror movie!! While the Friday films, especially the 1st 4, are faves on mine, and I may go and watch it at the cinema, I don't know why they need to be remade, you would think a new horror IP would be more popular. "My Bloody Valentine" was one of the better ones that I liked from that time, but seems to me that every horror movie from the 70's and early 80's is being "raped" and remade. I half expect everytime I read a movie site, to see that "Phantasm" is being remade. Maybe that could fool the younger fans, and release it under the other name it went by, "The Never Dead"....tagline....."If this doesn't scare you, you're already dead"

"Blood Beach" will pop up at some stage I'm sure as well.

I would rather see remakes than the PG-13 rated "horror" being produced these days.

Bravo!!! Well said. And by the way the Friday the 13th remake isn't a true remake...Jason is the killer, not Mrs. Vorhees. In fact I don't even think she's in it. It's more of a remake of Friday the 13th Part 2. And Jason wears the hockey mask from part 3 and not the pillow case he wore in his first appearance.

Sad, but true: people (especially the teen demo) will go out in flocks to see these films regardless of their actual quality and many will not even be aware that they are remakes (except for "Friday the 13th," obviously).

If Hollywood had an original thought go thru it's head it would be the quickest trip in history.

Remakes are nearly as old as Hollywood itelf. However, this current run of horror remakes is one of the most non-stop that I can remember. It is getting old.

I loved My Bloody Valentine, but the best of the shoegazers was Ride!

There's no such thing as an original idea anymore. Everything has been done.

That has been a fact since movies first began.

I remember reading a little while back that it was almost a mish-mash of the first 4 films. uh-huh. The trailer I saw looked interesting, but for one flaw. "Jason" was running like he was in the 400m in China!!!

And you just know, "The Burning" will be remade as well, that's almost the father of the slashes gender.

Two things...

- It's not a "mistake" that Jason is much faster in this new version: they decided to take him in a somewhat-more realistic direction (i.e. you will not see the character lumbering about after a sprinting victim only to somehow be right behind them in the climaxing moments).

- The granddaddy of the slasher sub-genre is technically "Psycho," not "The Burning."

Too often they're the same thing ("When a Stranger Calls", "The Fog", "Prom Night").

They're remakes because the stories are worth being retold, the story has been told but you still get freaked out because its the director's own spin on it. The Uninvited is the only one I haven't seen the original, its a Korean remake but from the reviews and buzz I've been hearing, I hear its definitely worth watching.

Actually, the real chief reason is because business-wise and financially, an already-existing property or material already has either some recognition or an actual fan base that very likely will show up at theaters -- hence it is the safer bet to go with a remake or "update" rather than take a chance on a new and unproven piece.

Sad, but true. The heads of the movie business in the end aren't in the business of making movies; they're in the business of making money. Originality, depth and actual all-around quality are ultimately not of concern to them if it doesn't bring in enough greenback.
