Hi everyone, just joined the forum, and I already need help
![]() I posed this question in a Playstation forum I am a member of as well, no offense ![]() Here is my problem. I have a PS3 that I use to watch Blu-Ray movies on. I am having a consistent problem that only occurs when I watch Blu-Ray movies, or play Blu-Ray games (But more noticeable in movies for some reason). What happens is, horizontal black stripes will appear during otherwise brightly-lit (Or even dark scenes that have, say a candle onscreen) scenes of movies, or in games. The stripes are always horizontal, and go from top to bottom on my screen. These stripes are very annoying but they do not appear when I watch regular DVD's on my PS3. The stripes happen the most when their is a horizontal panning movement, it seems. ![]() I don't understand what is causing it, but I think it may be my TV. I have a Toshiba Flat-Tube 1080i HDTV. I am using my PS3 with an HDMI Cable. Anyone else having this problem? And more importantly, why is this only happening during Blu-ray/HD material? Is my TV trying to tell me something? Should I try downgrading to component cables? |

Hi, thanks for the reply.
The PS3 does an auto-check to determine whether you have max. 1080i, p, or 720 i, p. My TV and PS3 match up and are 1080i, so that setting is correct. I followed your links, including the popular mechanics one. My symptoms don't match up with any of the pictures on there. You know, rather than take a picture of my own TV showing the problem, I just found an image (In an unrelated article) that shows exactly what is happening with my TV. Look at this, and you'll see what I'm dealing with: http://www.photoxels.com/images/Tuto...ontalLines.jpg Mine hasn't been quite that severe, but it is close to what you see here. And again, it's only during Blu-Ray movies, and in HD games. Last edited by Deciazulado; 07-02-2007 at 12:45 AM. Reason: changed hotlinked image to link |

That site will not display the picture correctly. So i posted a link to it. Here is something for you to read until others come along that can give you more help. Maybe you will happen upon the solution. Horizontal Bars, Buzzing Sound, etc? Look here... [Link removed] Last edited by GasCat; 07-06-2007 at 02:21 AM. |

Sorry about the linked photo, I figured I could use it for ten minutes and no one would notice
![]() Here goes again, new site: ![]() one thing did make sense, about using a 3 to 2 prong wall adaptor. It seems that that could work, so I am going to try that today to see if that eliminates my lines in the T.V., I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again. |

Tried everything from the PS forums. Nothing helped.
Anyone have any other suggestions before I admit defeat? I tried contacting the originator of that PS3 thread on the PS forums, haven't heard a response yet, of course. |

You wrote this:
"one thing did make sense, about using a 3 to 2 prong wall adaptor. It seems that that could work, so I am going to try that today to see if that eliminates my lines in the T.V." That is not a good idea. I don't know who recommended that but you should plug the TV into a surge protector of some sort and not the wall. I also have not heard of going from a 3 to 2 prong adapter but it sounds like the intention was to unground the TV. Horrible suggestion, one power surge and it could fry the mainboard. G/L if all else fails call your TV manufacturer for help. |

Have you tried hooking up a different PS3 to your TV or hooking up your PS3 to a different TV? Maybe you could check where you bought the TV to see if you can hook up your PS3 to another of the same model on their display floor. That might narrow down whether the problem is with the PS3 or TV.

Yup, you're right. I want to see his electrical engineering degree. If you plan on doing that I would suggest calling a licensed electrician and getting his advice. Sorry that I posted the link for you.

I can't move my PS3 to another room right now, but I'll try this weekend. Thanks for the multiple suggestions, but it's looking like my problem isn't going away any time soon. |

Un - be - lievable. I did what you said, I set my PS3 to 720p, and immediately switched on Saw 3 to look for the black lines. Nothing!!!!
This tells me that the bleeping HDMI cable I got right here: Gamestop is CRAP! I scrolled down and read reviews for the cable... this one says "... i just bought this cable and i dont think its good i keep geting a streak going down my new samsung i just bought. its a full 1080p tv and this cable anit that greate". So yeah, I did the stupid thing by buying an expensive HDMI cable, and it sounds like I was screwed out of my money, judging by all of the reviews. Now, one last thing. If I go buy a different brand HDMI cable tomorrow, and set my PS3 back to 1080i... will the streak return? That would be the worst thing in the world that could happen. I don't have another HDMI cable to test this, so its either buy a new one, or stay at 720p, which I would rather not do. Could someone please drop a line here before I go buy another cable? I'd really appreciate that. And baccusboy, you are a genius ![]() |

Sounds to me like the cable just doesn't hold up to the high bandwidth signal
This one should do it for you http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...ormat=2&style= |

UPDATE: Called Gamestop, didn't have the receipt for my HDMI cable, but he said "As a one time courtesy, I will trade your HDMI for another one." So, I'm gonna do that tomorrow, just to see how that goes. It'll be the same cable unfortunately, because they only sell one.
If the cable still does the same thing, then yes, I will definitely buy a different brand. WickyWoo, do you think they would sell one with quality similar to the one you just linked to at a department store like Walmart/Circuit City (Best Buy only sells $50 and up versions)? I will be near all of them tomorrow, and I'd really like to buy it in a local store if at all possible. I don't want to get ripped off again though ![]() Thanks for the quick response. EDIT: These are a couple of Walmart's HDMI cables. What are your thoughts on these: (The first linked one is Belkin... I have no experience with them... the second link is to a no-name at all HDMI cable, I dunno about that.) http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4810666 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5855137 Here is one more at Target. They all look the same, so I have no way of knowing which is best. I am hoping someone out there has more know-how on the situation than I. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=B0007MWE32 Sorry to keep editing my edits, but here is my actual TV, so you can look at its specs. Maybe that would help: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-30HF85.../dp/B000816XKM Last edited by MCWHAMMER; 07-06-2007 at 08:10 PM. |

The monoprice one is pretty good build quality (it's fine for normal short runs at 1080p)
The ones youbuy at stores will be extremely overpriced for essentially the same product Think $60-70 for the same $15 cable Looking at your TV, I'm guessing your existing cable is poorly shielded, which makes a lot of difference with high bandwidth devices, couldpled with the EM output of the CRT TV cause the problems with high frequencies like bright colors Last edited by WickyWoo; 07-06-2007 at 10:25 PM. |

Thanks for the advice. I realize I've been a gripe here for a couple of days, but if I can get my 1080i working right, I will be a quality member of this forum. It's nice to have people that can answer your ?'s about this kind of thing.
I'll keep you guys updated on my progress... none has been made as of this post, although 720p is working the way it should with my PS3. The problem returns when I go to 1080i. |

I highly reccomend the monoprice cable...
I went with someone's reccomendation for monoprice on this site when I needed like 30 feet of HDMI cable to run to my projector... I installed the projector this past monday and 1080p looks so amazing. The monoprice cable really is an excellent deal.... |
