Default Onkyo 706 Headache

I just got my 706 back after three weeks of waiting for the service center to fix the dreaded blue dot issue. Blue dots have vanished , but now the colors have gone crazy . Reds smear and pop all over the screen, and the menus of both my ps3 and direct tv box are pixelated . The problem is far worse than the blue dots ever were, and I am afraid it will be another three weeks before I can enjoy my surround sound again. Bummer . I am going back to the service center tomorrow, (which is hour and a half round trip) and they are going to test it in front of me . Hopefully they can fix this mess as my patience with this thing is growing thin.

Wish I would have just got a Yamaha as I have never had a problem with my previous receivers from them. But I have had nothing but problems from the onkyo's and intrgra's that I am using now. Give me some feedback if anything like this has happened to anyone.

Well I just got back from my certified onkyo service center, and my 706 has another faulty board. Woohoo I get to wait three weeks for the back ordered hdmi board to come in and then who knows the receiver may still not work. I will never purchase another onkyo/integra product or suggest any of their products to a friend. Truly weak.

One of the resistors on my 805 display burned out. Apparently it's pretty common. I was lucky and got it back up and running. I personally still don't have any issues with Onkyo but I'm not sure that I'll purchase one the next go-round. I think their support system is pretty bad though- the hold times just to be told to go to an authorized dealer are rough.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with it.

Sorry to hear about your problems OP. I had an Onkyo 605 and it was a good performer. Adn like aramis said, Onkyo's customer support could use a little support itself. They are pretty bad in this area. Good luck and I hope the next hdmi board is a winner.

I have some slight issues out of mine but I will send it off to get fixed. If it fails after that I'm just going to chuck it (send it in and gets the money reimb. from the ext. warranty) and get a Yamaha 663 or 665. I'll gladly pay a little more for better customer service. I called on Monday and the guy got an attitude with me because I didn't know the setting on my receiver.

Well, just got my 706 back and I can happily say it is finally working like I hoped it always would. The new hdmi board produces a much better picture than ever before, with natural colors and fast switching. I have also noticed that the annoying "clicks" that would usually accompany a switch of inputs have disappeared completely. So even though the wait was a *****. I did end up with a much better receiver in the end.

However, the tech from my service center and I actually talked a while about my receiver over the course of my repairs and he gave me some interesting info. Apparently, all he does is fix onkyos at that center, and all he has done for that last year is replace hdmi boards in both 706/806's. He says that onkyo knew about the issue during production and they hoped know one would notice. HA HA. But what was more concerning is that he would get a 706/806 to repair and onkyo wouldn't send him the parts. He said he would call and the answer was "no parts" or "well send you what we can". And what they would send were refurbished hdmi boards that were worse than the originals. An example would be my situation.

Well, just thought I would share my experience with you, and maybe open some eyes about onkyo's business tactics. On the upside though, the tech said the board he put in my 706 was a new design. We both came to the conclusion that the new board is out of the newer *07 models. Which is a good sign for those who still need to get their boards replaced.

I've heard similar things regarding Onkyo and getting parts, which is supposedly why a lot of repair places drop them or won't service them. There's only one place in my entire state that does so and the next closest is in Illinois.

The more I learn about Onkyo, the more I would recommend for people who are shopping for a receiver to look elsewhere. I still really like my receiver but I doubt my next purchase will be an Onkyo.

Oh wow! I never knew about this.

I see blue dots during some DVD playback in dark scenes - I just thought it was poor upconverting or something from the PS3.

Is this the problem you're referring to?

I don't have any blue mess on BDs or games - just DVDs.

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Pretty sure that's the one. Call Onkyo and get a tech to service it.
