Default Stores support both formats to capitalize on sales

Quote
“Our feeling is that we should continue to supply both until the customers tell us that we shouldn’t,” said Jim Litwak, president and chief operating officer at Trans World. “Blu-ray is outperforming HD DVD in stores, but the customer is still telling us they want HD DVD.”

I personally petition (or at least send emails to) stores that do not carry Blu-ray or have stopped or might stop carrying them. For example, I sent 2 emails to WalMart today complaining about how few Blu-ray discs there are and they should not make a format decision yet, I am confident that Blu-ray will win so I have nothing to worry about as long as they still have them.
I have also tried to complain to Universal but I'm sure they just ignored me.
I hope more stores will carry both formats at least long enough for the battle to finish this around q4.

I have complained at my local Wal-Mart, but nothing has been done. Target is set to open here in the Fall so hopefully more than 3 small shelves like Hastings has by my work. I also sent Universal an e-mail, but probably filed it in the junk box!

It's not going to end nearly that soon.

Also in the article:

Noting Blu-ray’s emerging sales dominance in 2007, Hastings Entertainment CEO John Marmaduke says the specialty chain is leaning toward solely supporting the format.

This follows Blockbuster’s recent decision to rollout only Blu-ray titles in 1,450 bricks-and-mortar outlets.

“Blu-ray looks to be clearly the winner,” Marmaduke said. “We’re not optimistic [about sales] until there’s one format. I think it could happen by first quarter of 2008.”

To accommodate this increasingly crowded category—which includes 735 current and expected BD and HD DVD titles, according to DVDEmpire.com—retailers are devoting more floor space and promotional punch to the products.
Why is an internet retailer making predictions about floor space? Odd, but I love the quote.

JULY 6 | Retailers are going mainstream with their marketing and merchandising efforts for high-definition discs as the number of titles released across the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats approaches 1,000.
Interesting, because when you add the two format's title count (including the repeated neutrals) it's only 555

(There's 370 individual (non repeated) movie titles in total)

I really don't think either format is going to lose. With how much consumers spend on electronics today I think this is just going to draw out until the next format comes along. And we'll all just have to deal with it. As long as enough people continue to purchase either format and they both make enough of a profit they will not go away.

what I merely meant wasn't that HD-DVD would be dead by then, but that everyone will (finally) realize that it is doomed after the holidays and it will be fading away after that.

You can spec-order from Hastings, but ya, it's a pita there. They're staying the Frack away from the format war. They bought into UMD and got burned hard. Summarily their business relationship with MS is better now than their business relationship with Sony. They're not going to seriously increase their stock unless Marmaduke pays another british consultant to tell him "Blu-Ray = good" or the war shifts to the BD v DVD state.

Ah nice quote from Marmaduke. I still stand by my statement though . While they see a clear winner, they're not going to push the format for some time. Now, them dropping HD-DVD I can see happening. Or more so, 9608 getting all the hd-dvd stock for the region and skewing my local market.
