Around 4 months seems to be the norm nowadays. And you're right. When I was a kid, I remember it being ALOT longer.

haha, you are showing our age...But yea it was a solid year and the new VHS cost about 100.00. The 80's and 90's was definitely a RENTAL market

Yeah VHS was exactly what I was thinking of. If you missed a movie at the theater in those days you had a long time to wait. Now it's no big deal.

I remember the days of a new release on VHS costing around $100. It puts a new perspective on the price of new release blu-rays when people complain how overpriced they are doesn't it?

And the VCR were like $1000 or more when they first came out. But you have to remember this was the first time you could own a movie and watch it at home.

I remember my dad bought a new VCR in 1980 (Hitachi) from the place where he worked. It cost him 1,100.00 and was a top loader. The remote control was a long cord running to the machine from where you sat. Our neighbor and my dad went in halves on a case of 10 blank TDK VHS Tapes. 100.00 dollars for the case so for 50 bucks we got 5 blank tapes and could record 3 movies per tape. In late 85 I paid 54.00 dollars for Back to the Future on tape. If I remember correctly it was because of a Pepsi commercial on the Top Gun tape that started the falling prices of VHS tapes.

Well, Warner Brothers held Fred Clause for a year so that it could be released during the Christmas season. That thought process must have been successful because Four Christmases was also given the year long wait and is coming to DVD and BD this Christmas season!

The top loaders bring back memories. When I was a kid we couldn't afford a VCR, but there was a local video shop that had several they would rent out, and they were top loaders. We always tried to make it in there early before all the VCRs were rented out on Friday so we could rent one for the weekend along with a few movies.
