Welcome to the forums

We're all waiting for more information about when Blu-ray will launch and how much the players and movies will cost. The only thing we know right now is that the US launch will most likely take place sometime early next year. There will most likely be some announcements when the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held from January 5-8, 2006 in Las Vegas.

As for your question about cases, the discs will have exactly the same look and feel as DVDs (12cm bare discs), so I don't see any reason why they would change the packaging for movies.

I suspect they will change the packaging to differntiate it from DVD. After all DVD is the same size as CD. They even changed the packaging for SACD, so I think it's a fair bet another change. The question is how? They must have run out of suitable shapes by now. Maybe turn the DVD box on it's side and hinge on the top sort of like a landscape page (it would then be a similar shape to 16:9).
Question what packaging will they use for HD-DVD
Answer NONE (it was a trick question)

Agreed. The packaging will have to be different than what's used for standard DVDs and CDs simply to cause less confusion among consumers. Bank on it.

Of all the cases already in existence, I'd prefer the nice round, thicker hinged cases used for some SACDs. Those cases are beautiful! Ain't gonna happen though.

While we're talking cases - my vote:

- Something that doesn't smash into a million bits if you drop it.
- And doesn't deteriorate cosmetically as easily as CD cases.
- A caddy style that doesn't need to be opened (doesn't need flimsy hinges etc), but can be if the player doesn't support caddies.
- A type that has, say, a slot for the booklet (booklet may be left in while playing).
- An unprinted area on the back for shop stickers/security devices (so that the content is not obscured).
- A policy of clear printing of content (including standards supported, logos) for the dim lighting of many shops and homes (and for those with poor eyesight).
- Std DVD size might be best as it offers a reasonable spine size to read; racks are already available.

My 2c.

Cheers,
TruBlu

I understand that the Xbox360 is using ordinary DVDs rather than either of those formats.

The PS3 will use Bluray

Yeah, there was just no way they could include Blu-ray or HD-DVD support without delaying the Xbox 360 launch. Also, it would make it very hard for Microsoft to compete with the PS3 if they have to subsidize a HD-DVD drive for every Xbox 360. It might appear as an optional thing for the Xbox 360 in the future, but I don't expect seeing it becoming standard.
