Default Blu-Ray price increase ...

Glad BD won the war, of course, but this is a bad side-effect. Whatever else we think about HD-DVD, their presence put pressure on BD to lower prices:

Yep. Prices are actually falling at most of my local stores.

They are almost as cheap as amazon now.

All of the sources I have seen that compare prices of the formats, or trends of prices in one format or another, have all been based off of MSRP, and as far as I'm concerned, that doesn't apply to me

Seriously.

If you are paying MSRP, you are either an exceedingly wealthy idiot, a lazy poor fool.

I think I average $16 a Blu-Ray ((looks over his records)) - yes, $16.54. Amazon + eBay.

I don't see why quoting a story on player prices going up is a FUD post.

It's the truth. The lack of downward price pressure by HD DVD is resulting in "list price" only deals on new players.

This is for players...

What's odd is that I haven't seen any of these prices increase so I am wondering where this info is actually coming from. Are they looking at the sales prices and then comparing them to non-sale prices? Because that's what it's looking like to me. It looks like they took prices from late last year/early this year and are comparing them to now. They do realize that there were holiday sales, right?

As for movies... The only price rise I have seen was at Best Buy on WB titles. They're marked $34.99 (which is what the HD DVD's would've been if they carried them, as they are HD DVD/DVD combos). But that's it...

I don't remember being able to pick up day and date titles for under $20 last year.

Now we have some big titles releasing at under $20 like I am Legend and National Treasure 2 (well - it was under $20 for a while and still under $20 in the 2 pack).

I certianly haven't seen any increase in the cost of software, and I would expect hardware to be a bit higher because we aren't in a sale season anymore and I imagine some new players have come out since christmas.

Same here. The prices haven't increased in my area either so it really makes me wonder where all this is coming from and why.

That's been the most disappointing thing about the format-war ending. I thought the level of FUD would drop once everyone was mostly on the same page but that hasn't really happened.

And what's odd is that if you look at that first chart, they're not going by recent prices on all the players. If you go by the recent prices, you'll see it's pretty even with the exception of 2 players. I think what's happening is that they're going by some online pricegrabber/watch thing. What can happen is someplace might start carying a player for the suggest retail price while others carry it for less. This would then raise the average price. So if more and more places are getting into Blu-Ray and asking for the retail price, the average price is going to go up. But if you look at a specific store like Best Buy and Circuit City, I guarantee that NONE of their prices for players magically increased.

Player prices are the exact same here as always. Only difference is now people are finally stocking BD players. Thanks!
Movie prices have gone down slightly. But Canada's prices are still ridiculous.

The MSRPs of the players haven't gone anywhere.

The stores choose what to sell them for.

To insinuate the BDA or the player manufacturers have anything to do with this is pure FUD.

FUD ALERT!! FUD ALERT!! FUD ALERT!!

Like the man said, MSRP's are exactly the same... and what's more, CE's have already announced players at cheaper MSRP's. For instance, the Sony BDP-S350 is $100 cheaper than the BDP-S300, and the BDP-S550 is the same MSRP as the BDP-S300.

How do you like them apples?! Blu-ray price DECREASE!!

Ridiculous -- the downward price pressure from Toshiba put pressure on manufactures and stores to bring BR player prices down. Around Xmas you could find stand alone players for less $400 (sometimes even $299).

Now you can't -- prices are back up.

These are facts ... it's not FUD (whatever that is). BR players will come back down eventually, but now the pressure is off from HD DVD.

Some people on this board are insane.

yeah -- apparently I forget that lack of fierce competition actually results in lower prices. You guys need to take Econ 101.

I don't doubt that prices will drop again (as input costs go down and R&D costs are recouped) -- I am just saying that BR player prices were already at the $300 price points once before. Now they are back up.

These are facts. You can choose to attribute the price increase to "slow season" -- but I think it is more logically the desire for higher revenues and lack of truly fierce competition. If you are having a slow season -- you cut prices to increase penetration rates. You don't hold the line at list price.

The fact that BDA won't license Blu Ray to cheaper Chinese manufacturers also say something about wanting to prevent the commoditizing of Blu Ray players (for better or worse) and to keep manufacturer and store profits higher.

Again.... There was no price increase. Note the calender. We were getting better prices during the Holiday Season. That's typical of all products. Now were out of the Holiday Season and the big sales to move product before the end of the year have ended. But there's still deals to be had, if one knows how to shop around.

Yes, on SALE! No offense, but if I want a computer, I tend to buy them around the time when kids go back to school or college... or whenever the state (GA) has a no-sales tax weekend... as the stores tend to lower prices more as they know they will be selling more. I wouldn't be surprised to see some good Blu-ray sales around Father's Day as Sony (for one) will probably be getting ready to release their BDP-S350 and stores might be anxious to lower prices to clear out inventory.

Years ago, I was getting about every DVD release I wanted for around $15, but after Christmas was over, the sales dropped and most every release I wanted was $19.95 (and one or two releases I wanted I could not find for less than $22.95).

OMG!! They're running a business! Plagues to them all!

BTW, I never took Econ 101, I did work in retail some and know others who still do!
