Default Star Trek TOS - Season 2 (with DS9 Episode)

According to this press release the second Season of TOS is also going to contain the DS9-Episode "Trials And Tribble-ations" in HD. I thought DS9 had it's postproduction done on video like TNG and that a Blu-Ray release was therefore very unlikley. Interesting.

Star Trek - Season 2 Sept 22

Great news, but what exactly does this mean? And, what is the relevance of having a DS9 episode on ST:TOS Season 2?

Hopefully it proves that DS9 and TNG will look amazing on blu. There was a lot of question of this due to how they were filmed.

Season 2 has the episode Trials and Tribulations. The DS9 episode is tied to it because of the 25th anniversary.

We are bound to see TNG and DS9 on Blu sooner or later, no matter how they were filmed. This is to big a franchise not to put out there on Blu, no matter the cost.

I enjoyed that episode. I liked how they integrated the DS9 crew into the original crew (Sisko talking to a young Kirk ). They even made Worf cover his forehead because Klingons of that time didn't have knobbly foreheads (obviously because of budgets/fx of the time) and a jokey reference is made, if I remember correctly Worf says he doesn't want to talk about it

I know this should be TOS' time, but the news about the HD DS9 episode is wonderful. If it's true HD, then there is plenty of hope for HD TNG, the rest of DS9, and VOY. Best part is that the first HD DS9 episode is one my favorites.

It means that, despite previously existing as SD masters and thus not appropriate for Blu-Ray, it's showing Paramount/CBS can go back to the film elements (if this episode wasn't already in HD when made) and rebuild HD versions of the three SD video based spin-offs. (ENT was already in HD, I heard and TOS was finished on film). The relevance of having the DS9 episode on the TOS Season 2 set is because the DS9 episode in question features the DS9 crew traveling back into time and meeting the TOS crew. Given that there's also a Tribble episode during the Animated series, the studio thought it be cool to collect all the Tribble episodes on one disc, making a Tribble trilogy.

It's not about how they were filmed, it's about how they were finished. The film was scanned onto SD video, where all the editing and compositing happened. To make HD versions would mean re-scanning all the film and re-doing all the editing and compositing. That's why people assumed TNG, DS9, and VOY would never enjoy an HD release. Thankfully, Paramount/CBS is about to prove us wrong...unless it's just an up-resed version, in which case, holy **** should be raised. However, I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume we're finally going to see some HD Trek spin-offs. It will probably look great.

I knew there was hope for HD spin-offs as soon as I read this post on DVDTown forum:

His exact words were "It's not something we discuss with outsiders". The episode was pure epic all the way. You can't go wrong when two (almost) full crews are seen together when it's not in comics or artwork and when they're 30 years apart and the older crew still looks like they did back then. Best episode ever. I have a VHS of it, on DVD as part of the Klingon collection (highly recommended), and I'll be more than happy to go again for an HD version.

A fun little bit of fun trivia: Walter Koenig (Chekov) claims he was paid eight times for the DS9 episode than he was for the original TOS episode.

Awesome News, not only because we get an episode of DS9 in HD (Third best series in the franchise behind TNG and TOS), but because i've always wanted to see the franchise treated like this. it boggled my mind why space seed was never thrown in as an extra on any of the Wrath of Khan DVD's or Bluray, it would make perfct sence to add it as it is essentially a prequel to the events of the film

It's also too bad that the voyager episode "flashback" wasn't added to any DVD/Blu-ray version of The Undiscovered country. Flashback wasn't an overly great episode but it was awesome to see more of sulu and the Excelsior (missed opportunity by not making that into a series)

I think the franchise as a whole should be doing little things like this, i'm not sure how many season 3 TOS episodes tied into any episodes from later series though (but how cool would it be to get the TNG scotty episode or the 2 part Spock episode as an extra on season 3 of TOS on blu)

Also too bad they only thought of this now, it would have been cool to see the TNG episode "The Naked now" as an extra on season one to go along with TOS episode " The Naked Time"

Great! I was already planning on getting this to complement my TOS season 1 set, so all the more reason to buy it!

Agreed, it would have been really nice to see that. Especially since I have no great love or interest in the TV series releases, but enjoy the movies. Of course, if they had inclued it... it would remind all the viewers of the huge plot hole where Khan never meets Chekov in the episode.

lol, very true, however I think it's become cannon that Chekov was on the ship before season 2, he just wasn't promoted to the bridge so we never saw him (much like we rarely saw many of the 400 crewmen, unless it was important to the plot or they had lines in the script). So it's possible that Khan ran into Chekov off screen and even if just briefly Khan's genetically enhanced brain would remember him 15 years later on Ceti-alpha. Walter Koneig tells a story that Chekov used all the toilet paper just as Khan entered the bathroom, and Khan swore to never forget his face

But yes, it’s a terrible plot hole and it makes you wonder why they just didn't use Sulu or Scotty in that role and left Chekov on the ship. Nick Meyers commented on this on the Commentary but he basically said he didn't care, lol (Which is why like JJ Abrams, Meyes was the best thing to happen to star Trek because he respected the franchise but didn't care if he bent the rules to make an exciting movie)

Although I’m glad they did use Chekov, simply because "Captain...they put creatures, in our bodies" wouldn't sound as funny without a Russian accent

I'm JUST WONDERING:

Paramount just released two TOS seasons and all the 10 theatrical movies on BD format IN ONE YEAR (2008/2009). Right? Are they working on them or just slapping some files on BD format? I mean, how much work does it take to prepare a decent BD release in terms of remastering?

The first TOS season looks perfect, as well as KHAN. I'm not too sure about the rest... the first movie looks very very good (not restored anyway), but the last 4 kinda suck. IMHO.

Why is Paramount doing that? Rushed releases?

Probabaly so they can make paper hats out of all the money they make off the Star Trek Franchise

I think it is fair to say Paramount does wh0re out the Trek franchise (although every studio does that with its franchises) but to be honest they seem to be taking care of the releases, The TOS series began being remastered a few years ago and then again for the HD-DVD so it's not like they just started working on them a few months ago, the only reason the Blu's where delayed was because paramount went to the dark side for a bit there and went HD DVD exclusive. And while the movies on blu created a lot of controversy, the reason they had DNR was because paramount admited that work on the restoration began back when it was standard studio policy to use DNR to polish up old releases (which means work began a while back)

So its not as if they are rushing the preparation of the blurays, just perhaps rushing the relases of them, but with this being the year of JJ's Star Trek, i can't blame them for trying to saturate the market with as many Star Trek Releases as they can (i'm sure in 2 years when Star Trek 2 hits theatres we'll see more stuff on bluray)

ST1 and ST2 look fantastic, I'm sure they will re-release the other 4 too... after a major re-remastering.

Not trying to start anything, just add what I know about Nick Meyers. According to what was said, Nick was given all the episodes in no particular order and did not realize that Chekov was not in all 3 seasons. At least, that's what he said. I can understand that, I mean it was before the internet was widely being used, before it was on VHS, and when I watched them in the 70s they were never run in any certain order.

It has to do with the masters that they used for the movies and the fact that they really didn't remaster all of the TOMP movies for the blu release.

The PQ was subpar on a few of the The Original Motion Pictures, however one thing that people who are obsessed about PQ often overlook is the fact that everything Star Trek on blu so far has had a killer sound track with the Dolby TrueHD 7.1. I hope they keep this up.

But I am very pleased with the progress they've made in remastering every single TOS epsiode. They need to do this to TNG as well.

I just looked at the extras, it was Harve Bennett that stated he watched the episodes out of order and didn't realize Chekov wasn't in the 1st season. Oops.

Yes it was Harv that came up with the idea to continue on from an episode of the series, he chose space seed as it was left open with spock's line about "it would be interesting to return here in a hundred years and see what the seed we planted today has grown into" (not the exact quote, but its something like that)

Chekov's absence from "space seed" was just something no one involved caught (or did catch but didn't care as Meyers has eluded too), but watching all the episodes out of order would be a good enough reason to not have picked up on who was in the cast, after all except for kirk, spock and mccoy there where dozens of episodes that certian cast members didn't appear (even Mccoy was absent from a few early on)

Whats amazing to think about is what other TOS epsisodes could have been spun off into a movie if space seed hadn't been chosen (which could have easily happend as they began writing without asking Ricardo Montabon if he was willing to reprise his role)

Maybe a "Spock's Brain" sequel

"Spock's Brain" . I think another episode that may have worked was "A Piece of the Action". McCoy did leave his tricorder behind.
