Depending on the Kuro model, you may not need to calibrate it. I used the mew Spears & Munsil calibration disc ($25 or free with the OPPO BDP-83) on mine, and hardly changed snything.
$25 beats $200-300 for a pro, and you will learn something about calibration!

I just got done using the Spears and Munsil disc , All I had to change was the Brightness, Color, and Contrast a little bit because every other setting seemed to be ok.

The calibration you do with the Spears & Munsil disc is NOTHING like the calibration you will get from a professional! A professional calibrator will access your service menu, which can only be done using professional calibration tools

sarge1976,

How is the PQ of the Panasonic G10 compared to Pioneer Kuro and the Sony BDP-S550 compared to Oppo BDP83? Thanks.

I have a Kuro. I already have the very best picture quality.

That's why I bought a 151. If it looked like crap, I wouldn't have spent the money.

Calibration is a hustle.

DNICE's settings get Kuro displays looking very good. A professional calibration completed by a competent professional makes Kuro displays look glorious. I recommend seeking out Jeff Meier or Accucal.

I agree, for the Elite. There are numerous adjustment settings on the Elites that can be made by the owner without giving a professional calibrator $300 to $400.

I just got my 60" Kuro Elite tthis weekend. I paid for the pro calibration, to be done in a couple of months, when I paid for the TV. But I gotta tell you, I can't fathom this having a better picture than it has right now with factory settings on "Optimum". I looked up the settings cnet used when they did their review. I set the "Pure" mode with those settings, but I still think it rocks best on "Optimum".

You and the guy who believes a pro calibration is a hustle are 100% dead wrong. I have a Kuro and my friend has a Kuro and we used DNICE's settings and it made an improvement over standard Pure and Optimum. Jeff from Accucal brought in his very expensive cameras and custom software and made a night and day improvement over these settings.

ISF calibration is not a hussle as long as you pick the best professional to do the work. Jeff is also amazing with audio calibrations. My system performs like a well oiled machine after Jeff finished with the ISF video and audio calibration.

Take it from a guy who has the experience and has done the research.

I like Optimum also but it is just not as accurate as Pure. I watched the Chargers game yesterday and from a certain distance you could not see the lightning bolts on the white helmets whereas on Pure you could.

Anyway I decided to to reset my Pure settings from the Cnet recomendations that I had been using to the original factory settings. I used the before and after function to compare the two and I thought the factory settings looked more natural. I guess each set will vary.

I agree that Optimum sure looks good except for that white saturation.

The Cnet review said that they do calibrations on all tvs before they evaluate them for review and that the Pioneer in Pure mode needed only a few minor adjustments for their calibration. It was very accurate out of the box. After these minor adjustments they rated the Kuro a perfect 10. Yet you say there is a night and day difference.

I would like someone to post before and after calibration pictures of the Pioneer Kuro 111. I don't doubt that calibration improves the picture but I doubt it improves the Kuro 111 enough to justify spending $300 to $400 to improve an already very accurate picture in pure mode.

I have yet to see a picture in the theater or showroom that surpasses what I now have on the Kuro in pure mode.

Read that and let me know if you STILL think that CNet performs ALL these measurements and makes ALL the necessary adjustments prior to reviewing a TV set to make it absolutely perfect. The calibration they do is probably using the DVE disc, which Ill agree, leads to very little tinkering with the standard settings (but NOT any service menu changes!!!)

This is what CNET says about their calibrations:

"Note that, unlike many of the third-party TV calibrations offered today, such as those available from contractors certified by groups like the ISF, the calibrations performed for CNET TV reviews no longer utilize settings in the hidden "service menus" of televisions. Nearly all HDTVs have these menus, and previously we would access them to better calibrate our review samples. In the last couple of years, however, we have begun posting our ideal dark-room picture settings as part of our reviews, and since users cannot typically assess those service menus (at least, not without voiding the warranty), we decided to no longer use them in our calibrations. We recommend that TV viewers avoid accessing the service menus themselves, because without proper training they can do more harm than good. Happily, many new HDTVs offer ample controls to achieve optimum picture quality without having to resort to service menus."

I submit that the Pionee Elite Kuro is one of those new HDTVs that "offer ample controls to achieve optimum picture quality without having to resort to service menus."

Anyway they made very little adjujstments to the picture and yet still rated it as the best they have reviewed. http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...?tag=mncol;lst

Your link is very helpful for demonstrating the various settings, however I can achieve most of those results without accessing the service menu or giving someone $400 for a calibration.
