Default Keep Stafon Johnson in your thoughts...

I cant think of a worse way to go out...

5+ hours of surgery. Definite NFL prospect to a insane injury like that...

Oh, Running back for USC, dropped a 275lb bar on his neck doing a bench press.

i was thinking the same thing. i heard the bar slipped from one of his hands though. even if the spotter was sharp and aware any sudden slip like that would still crush him as it did. hope he gets well. don't like USC at all but this is a sad accident.

Never heard of him so it's hard to think about him.

My guess though is he was doing what he always dreamed of and getting paid something like 20 million or more a year to basically play.

I'm not sure I can really help the guy.

He's a college football player so he probably wasn't getting paid anything!

He had a spotter, but when a bar slips from your hands it is the worst situation. Spotters are only there to help lift the bar once you get too much to get it off your chest. In the case of a hand slip there is no spotter that is quick enough to grip the bar in enough time, it would all happen too fast, at best the spotter would hope to keep the bar away from the face area and get lower towards the chest where the body is more apt at taking that much weight. I feel for the guy and hope he gets well and can get back into the sport as he is a talented back.

Bummer, but I don't think I'll be keeping him in my thoughts.

Fortunately his doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

he had a spotter but the spotter can't do much if the bar falls completely.

it was 275 pound bar, the spotter is there to give minimal help with the last few reps but if the guy benching completely slips it then it's very difficult to "catch" something like that.

I think the player had his thumb on the wrong side of the bar(which you shouldn't do but people do it anyway) was struggling with the last few reps and it slipped backwards and fell on his neck.

anyway, best of luck to a quick recovery.

I've been thinking about how it was possible for the bar slip out of his hand, this is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Lots of guys try using only their palms after they have been lifting for a while, the bar slips and the wrist and fingers are simply not strong enough to catch a weight like that once it gets going

I hope he gets well! Man, a barbell to the throat. I just couldn't even imagine.

For those wondering about a spotter, as others have said, a spotter would do little to nothing to be able to help in this situation. You simply cannot "catch" that much weight when you're in a spotting position. The physics involved in that just don't allow it. If anything, the spotter would've been dragged down along with the barbell, and then he'd have fallen on the guy, too, which would have been over 500 lbs on the guy's throat.
