I got The Dark Knight on Blu-ray a week ago. When I put it in, it plays fine. Its plays great for about 45 minutes. Then it stops. I can bring up the control panel, but it wont let me do anything and I can use the play, FF, RW and pause buttonsbut the screen stays the same. I can quit playback, but it wont load ANY other discs or demos untill I turn it off and then back on again. If I try to turn it off the light on the front just flickers untill I turn it off manually. I have a 40GB PS3 hooked up with a new HDMI cable. Im pretty sure that its not the system because I've plaed Blu-rays on it before. But I also dont think that its the disc because it keeps doing it in different spots. And, sometimes it skipsfirst but sometimes it just stops out of no where. I bought it used at Gamestop in January so I dont think I have a valid warranty anymore.
I really dont know what to do Last edited by Joker1525; 09-15-2009 at 11:18 PM. |

The laser in the PS3 has had problems with overheating considering how much heat those things put out! This isn't the first time I have heard of this problem, it's quite common.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=70948 I didn’t have the confidence so I called Sony and they agreed that the problem sounded like a laser issue so they gave me a reference number and I went to my place of purchase where they gave me a refurb 80gb PS3 (I had a day 1 60gb PS3 but they had none at the time and would have taken a few weeks to get it). I didn’t have a receipt or anything, all the shop wanted was the reference from Sony! So I was only without the console for 1 night.. Would have been less if I made it to the shop on time before it closed! Very quick, great service. It cost me €160 (I live in Ireland). I think the same works in the UK. In America though I think it costs roughly the same, but Sony send you a box for you to send your console to them, and you get it/a refurb back in a week or so.. (someone will correct me if I am wrong about that) |

Hi,
If you're warranty isn't valid you can... 1) Send the PS3 to Sony and they will send you a refurbished one in return for $150. Takes about a week maybe more. 2) Determine that it's really the laser. (Usually soon your PS3 does everything except read discs,... then you can be pretty sure it's the laser.) Buy one from Ebay or some other vendor, and attempt to change it yourself. The PS3 is the only Blu Ray player I know of that has replacement lasers readily available from third party vendors and there are some guides for swaping it in the PS3 forum. I've heard it's easy but looking through the guide... I think it's at least a little bit tricky. You want to be careful and sober and careful. =Brian |

Yes, make sure that it is the laser problem before thinking of replacing it. TDK works fine on PS3. Firstly check whether the problem is only with TDK. Check with other blu-rays. It is a possibility that you have a defective disk. A defective disk may stops in different places if it has many errors on it.

Sounds to me like the early signs of a dying laser. It started like this for me on my 40gb system after 16months of use and soon it would freeze on every bluray about 25min in. Since my system was out of warranty I followed MarineMikes youtube tutorial videos and replaced the laser myself for $70 (price of KES-400A laser) and now everything works fine.
I suggest you just wait to make sure the laser is the problem and if it is you should take the ps3 apart to check the laser model number (follow Marinemikes videos) and order the laser from the site, psxboy.com. They charge about $70 with shipping. After you have completed the install, pat yourself on the back because Sony would have charged you $150 for similar service. Best of luck! |
