I rented Outlander on DVD a while ago. I simply loved the movie. I actually wish the deleted scenes had been completed so they could have paired the theatrical cut with an extended cut. I just liked the world (and characters) so much I wanted to spend more time in it.
However, whenever I search for it on Blu-ray, all I find is the Canadian release. This would be no issue but from what I've read the Canadian release is not in the film's original aspect ratio of 2.40:1 but rather open matte and cropped (the latter for all FX shots) to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. I know there is a thread about the Canadian release but I'm not interested in it for the aforementioned reason. So I ask, is there a US release of Outlander on Blu-ray? If so, is it presented in the correct 2.40:1 aspect ratio? And, of course, where can I get it? ![]() |

As for the Canadian version being fixed and re-released through Amazon.ca, the origianl poster said orders placed after July 22, 2009 should be shipped as the corrected version. but so far, all that's a rumor.
This will be a blind buy for me, but from seeing the trailers at various sites it looks to be very good. So I've been doing quite alot of asking here and there, going to various sites, etc. This is what I've found so far. Canadian...Alliance screws up again...re-release with correct aspect ratios is the rumor going around. I've personally e-mailed Alliance about 3 weeks ago, and have not recieved, nor do I expect an answer. French...region B, but it is not locked. So it should be fine in USA players. The downside is when selecting English for the audio, you get "forced" French subtitles. Spanish...again region B, but it's not locked. I have no information about the audio, or if any "forced" subtitles. Sweden...a member here at Blu ray.com who lives in Sweden just bought it. He said it had the proper aspect ratios. But he said the audio is plain old Dolby Digital 5.1 and the video looked great. But on the Sewdish site, megastore.se the audio is listed as DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Region B...but I do not know if it's locked. UK...release date is Aug. 31, 2009. Looking at Amazon.UK site, says it will be region 2 ( B ) But if you look at the Blu Ray region code info website, it seems the majority of Blu ray released in the UK end up being region free. A member of High Def Digest ordered this version and he is in the USA, and he said he will let me know if it plays on his USA player. USA... no info at this time. Most think it won't happen. Blu ray region coding site http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b And at this time, that's all the information I have I'm also wondering if there would be enough support to get a group buy for Outlander from somewhere other than Canada. I'm still holding off on this purchase, and that's hard for me. I love the various incarnations of Beowulf, and have followed this film's journey since I first read about it in 2006. Being in Toronto, I could run out tomorrow and buy a copy at Future Shop of Best Buy, but all the rumours about a new release with OAR are making me wait. The UK release has a making-of feature that the CAN version does not have, so if the UK proves to be region-free, then I guess I have to wait for news about that one. Hopefully, a new North American release will have corrected aspect ratio as well as the new UK making of feature.
In the meantime, we wait. I have to admit, if the unwanted early edition of Outlander ends up in the sale bin at Future Shop, I'll probably cave in and buy it. Last edited by LaserD; 08-09-2009 at 11:09 PM. |

You take your chances always with Amazon, because the product information is often inaccurate. I regularly submit corrections to Can and US Amazons as a courtesy to other customers. Things like aspect ratio, bonus features, subtitles are most likely to be affected by inaccurate or missing entries. This was definitely one title I wanted to pick up in person. |
