Default Any WWII or History Fans out there?

Just curious if there are any other history buffs out there? I love reading/watching anything related to WWII. The Allied Invasion of Normandy really interests me-what/who was involved, vehicles and weapons used, military strategies put into place....etc. Bascially anything that has to do with history intrests me.

Thoughts anyone?

History minor here (wanted to have majored in it, but no money in history) - have a big ol' library of history books, but I am a pretty damn knowledgeable in 20th century warfare amongst other things. More of a hobby though, really.

I really enjoyed learning history in community college. I have always been interested in this country's beginnings. .However, it is kinda disappointing to also learn that this country was pretty racist up until the last 70 years or so. I mean, African, Japenese, kinda shameful. Yes, I know it is still around but, wow, I was shocked.

I also really enjoyed when our teacher talked a bit of the military aspects( he also taught all many other history....and he was a great teacher that could make anything seem interesting)

Yep. I can't get enough of the History and Military channel, particularly when it comes to WWII. When they call them "the greatest generation", it's almost an understatement in my opinion. What those people (soldiers and civilians alike) did and sacrificed back in the 40's goes beyond words to describe. I go out of my way to personally thank WWII veterans whenever I have the honor of meeting one.

It's really a shame that many people these days have no clue what that generation did in order to secure the freedoms we all take for granted today. God bless them all.

I too am a Military Channel perennial and also read whatever WWII books I can get my hands on. The acounts of the experiences of soldiers and civillians alike is very humbling and extremely moving.

My Grandad was with the Royal Artillery in Normandy but alas he died in 1969 when I was a year old and so I never had a chance to speak to him. My brother has his service medals, which he says are the most precious things he owns.

Here's my Grandad below (in the top hat, with the machine gun):

Love the History, and Military channels. Growing up, History was the only subject I liked, and could keep my interest.

If my screen name didn't make it obvious, I love Roman history I'm fascinated with ancient history in general (Greece, Rome, Egypt) as well as the middle ages. Old stuff seems more interesting to me I guess.... (though I do like 18th century, Civil War, and WWII stuff!)

I love all history. I love going to Gettysburg, Valley Forge, and Mt. Vernon and just taking in the sites.

For anyone that hasn't seen John Adams...BUY IT!

Yes. Hubby got me into this as he loves this stuff and DVRs a lot of the Military Channel and History channel shows. There was a really good show about Stalin and the Katyn massacre in Poland. He has a lot of blu-rays of WWII movies as well.

There's a blu-ray out called "Katyn" from Poland that has English subtitles and is region free but the website was in Polish and the translator was really bad. Just haven't ordered it yet. As far as I know you can only get it from Poland. You can get the dvd from Amazon.

I have always had an interest in history. So much so that I minored in WWII history. Naturally, I also enjoy military history. This has led to an interest in military weapons, equipment and aircraft too. But my history "fetish" isn't all macho. I also really enjoy old buildings, old photographs, old maps, old coins, old...anything really.

For people who really like history (in general, not just WWII) I'd recommend the Hardcore History podcast. The host, Dan Carlin, loves history, and you can easily tell from how excited he gets doing his podcasts. Really informative stuff too.

http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hh

His podcasts are on the lengthy side (often 1hr+... some are parts of a series which in total might be 4-5+ hrs long), but he only puts them out once a month or so, at most, so you have plenty of time to listen through them at your leisure.

I wouldnt say Im a "history buff" but I do read a fair amount of history. I just read Psines Common Sense and John Lockes Two Treatises on Civil Government. One book that Im still trying to get though is The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, by William J. Shirer. Its fantastic I just never seem to have the time to get to involved with it.

if anyone is around South Carolina i recommend going to Charleston. you can take tours of the WWII Aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown a WWII Submarine and Destroyer. you can also go take a tour of the Civil War Fort Sumter. they will even take you around the town in a horse and buggy and show you all the artillery battery's, and houses that were owned by important people in history.
