Question Calibration Confusion

Hi Guys,

OK, I'm really confused. I have a pretty crappy HD LCD TV. It's a Goodmans 32" 720p (yeah, I know, WHO?). I think it's a rebranded Evesham (again, WHO?). I think Evesham are a monitor manufacturer.

Anyway, I used to use a Samsung HD860 DVD player and when I calibrated the TV using DVE I found that I didn't have the best blacks (big surprise) and that my whites at 90-100% clipped into the above white data. So I calibrated best as I could and that was that.

Then I upgraded to a Sony BDPS350 and I used the DVE disc to calibrate again (I haven't got around to replacing the dvd version with the BD version yet) and found that now in addition to the 90-100% whites clipping into the above white data I couldn't display below black information. Well, again I calibrated best I could and left it at that.

Last night i was doing a little tinkering with the Sony's settings and I changed the YCbcR/RGB (HDMI) setting from Auto to RGB (16-235) and all of a sudden I'm displaying the full range of data. 90-100% White is no longer clipping and I can see the BTB bars. So I start to calibrate again but now I have to lover my brightness levels so much to make the BTB bar disappear that when I play a disc the picture is waaay too dark. Like difficult to make out details dark.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on?
