Onkyo HT-S3200, hook up advise

I ordered an Onkyo HT-S3200 HTiB last week (should be receiving it by the end of this week, hopefully) and I've been thinking on how I'm gonna hook it up. As you know, the HDMI for this system is video only and pass through. I figured I wouldn't need a receiver that decoded TruHD and any other HD formats because I have a PS3 and it's supposed to do that. My question is do I need to hook my PS3 into the HDMI port of the receiver since I'm going to have to use optical for sound anyway? It seems to me I can just plug my PS3 directly into my TV and use the optical for the surround. Is there any benefit of plugging my PS3 into the receiver then to my TV? Just seems like unnecessary wire clutter...
