Australia Speaker Upgrade time

G'day all,

I've got $2000 to spend which equates to around $1752 US.

I currently have HTiB, Yamaha 5.1 speakers/sub which are at there limits so i would like to upgrade.

I have a 50inch Full HD Samsung Plasma, Onkyo 607 Receiver and using HDMI for both Audio & Visual.

Just from the Receiver, True HD/HDMA is amazing but i want more...

My room is 12ft long x 10ft wide.

Basically, i'm looking for a decent centre, front 2, rear 2 and a good sub for around the $2000 AU mark. Budget is flexible but i'd like to keep it around that.

If your recommended speakers/sub need wires/plugs etc, please state.

Help would be appreciate guys.

Thanks!

TV is on a Wall Bracket mate so it's not sitting on anything.

I currently have a bookshelf centre so i may have to stick with that unless i can make some sort of riser or shelf which shouldn't be an issue.

You could all ways just upgrade your L/C/R and sub and then use the htib speakers for sides and surrounds. 95% of the audio usually comes from the front soundstage anyway. So those will be the speakers that you want to shine.

That way you could go all out and get some really NICE speakers and go with a 7.1 system!

haha that's a great idea but 1 small issue, the rears are actually up the back of the room.

For example, i'm sitting 8ft away from my tv and the rears are in line with me. I almost sit against a wall.

Is your tv on the 10' or 12' wall?

10' mate

Hmm sorry to mislead you guys, i just measured the wall distance's and i was a fair wackk out.

The room is actually 9ft in length (8ft viewing distance) and 8ft wide (the wall tv is on.

Glad I didn't have to talk you into changing it!

For a 50" tv you should be sitting a little closer (6.5'-8') so that would give you some room behind your seating for speakers.

Sorry, I just saw your edit. I would still try to move your seating closer.

Should have mentioned that it's my bedroom so i'm sitting just off my wall.

People usually don't bother helping me when i mention the word "bedroom" as they tell me i shouldn't even bother but i honestly don't see the difference between someone's lounge/dedicated theatre to my bedroom theatre.

I've soundproofed the walls, got my switchboard's put in, got all the cabling under the carpet, movie posters and the room is perfectly square.

Only difference would be the size as it's only 8x9' as i stated earlier and that i'm using my bed for seating instead of a couch.

I find it the perfect viewing environment, my centre speak is at head height and the same height as my front R/L speakers. My Sub is in a great position on a riser and my rear's are 1&1/2 ft above my ear's.

I've upgraded my Plasma, my receiver and now i think it's time to do speakers

So were you thinking 5.1 and using dipoles for the sides?

There is nothing wrong with a bedroom setup. I would just mount your tv above your bed and turn it up really loud!

My TV is mounted above my bed and i don't use TV volume when i watch movies, just pure centre speak, fronts and surrounds and it's great.. i love it. It's just like the movies.

If i could just get suggestions for 5.1 speakers, i would be greatful

Will you be buying local or have it shipped in from elsewhere? If local, what brands are avilable there?

Well i just had a thought.

my JB Hi Fi store across the road from me is a dealer for Dali and they have just about everything Dali in stock...

I was thinking the following:

Dali Concept 6 Floorstanding Speakers - Front L/R
Dali Concept Centre Speaker
Dali Concept 1 Bookshelf Speakers - Rear L/R
Dali Concept 12inch Subwooder (possibly a tad to big for my room so i was thinking maybe a "Jensen" 10 inch which is also in stock).

Total cost is around $2500 AU which is fine but im concerned, are the Dali Concept actually going to give me much of an improvement or is there alot better out there for the price?

The DALI's are a wonderful speaker and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to pick those up. They are most definately a notch or 2 or 3 above many other speaker companies.

awesome mate, exactly what i wanted to hear

But in saying that, the range i've chosen (Concept) are considered the entry level to Dali speakers.

Are the Concept range still decent? How would they compare to the speakers you guys over in the US (Polk, Paradigm etc)?

The Concept series are absolutely a decent speaker, regardless of them being their entry-level offering. Dali's, like Dynaudio and Totem to name but two other brands, are highly regarded in the audiophile community. You will not be disappointed with their performance, especially if music plays a significant role.
