I've got a reciever only capable of normal dolby digital and DTS and i tried uncompressed sound using dolby pro logic II to create a surround effect.I'm aware you're only getting HD sound from the front left and right and i don't understand people who have said this sounds better than normal dolby digital and DTS because theres no real surround effects. You're just getting in the rears what you're getting in the fronts but of course not uncompressed. So i'd say if you havent a HD reciever stick to DD and DTS,it may not be HD but at least its the proper surround sound track and it's the way the soundtrack is meant to be played.

Depending on the player, you may only get a PCM 2.0 stereo signal. For Pro-Logic and Pro-Logic II to work properly, the receiver needs to see a PCM 2.0 Surround signal.
The PS3 only outputs 2.0 stereo signal so I get very poor Pro-Logic II decoding with channel bleed, front heavy sound, and over use of subwoofer. I just listen to the lossy tracks as these sound much better through my equipment. |

Yes. I bitstream the lossy tracks so everything works perfectly. No channel bleed, no front heavy sound, and the subwoofer is used when it needs to be.
It may be lossy DD or lossy DTS but the soundstage sounds far more natural. Last edited by steve_dave; 09-14-2009 at 04:04 PM. |

If the receive hasn't got HDMI the best method is to use optical 5.1 DD or DTS and let the player bitstream DTS core or DD track. blu-ray DTS is better than DVD DTS. It is not a good idea to stream PCM through optical since optical is bandwidth limited.

I have an old Dolby ProLogic II AVR in my bedroom. It's probably 20 years old. You should know that PL2 is only 4-channel (LF, RF, Ctr, Rear). And as Steve Dave said, a PL2 AVR can't decode those 4 channels properly unless it is coded for PL2. Your best bet is to use 2-channel stereo and let the AVR synthesize the other channels as the others have said. Then start saving for that new 5.1 or 7.1-channel AVR with HDMI.

My understanding of Dolby Prologic II is that it could simulate (very effectively) 5.0 surround from any good stereo signal?
If the signal has the older dolby surround encoded into it then it will successfully decode that too, but it isn't required to get a surround effect (albeit simulated based on mathematical algorithms regarding frequency, phase and L+R separation) |
