http://www.techradar.com/news/home-c...gic-iiz-499794 Just when we were trying to digest 7.1 surround, Dolby unveils this. Apparently, Onkyo's TX-SR607 will have this feature. Has anyone had the opportunity to listen to this at CES 2009? If so, thoughts? |

Height speakers aren't really anything new, I have been hearing about them for years. It is interesting that they claiming they can be a substitute for rear speakers, as well as an addition. I wonder if the general populace though is ready to add even more speakers to their home systems. It might be a new way for theaters to try and hold onto some market share, by having more advanced surround sound.
I haven't heard any demonstrations with the height speakers but I have read that they sound amazing. I'm not in a position to upgrade my receiver anytime soon but I certainly would be able to add the speakers in no problem if the content starts coming out to support this. |

I wonder if we can get a special firmware update to upgrade our current Onkyo receivers instead of buying all new ones.

This is essentially what Yamaha has done with their top-of-the line receivers, which create 11.1(2) with the addition of four "presence" speakers, rather than two, which are mounted in similar locations--high up , almost next to the ceiling. I've never heard these, but they utilize Yamaha-specific, proprietary DSP to create the effect. It's nice to see an industry-wide standard emerging, which at least gives consumers the option. If it's easily implemented, there's no reason not to develop it. We can always turn it off if we don't like it.
I like it, Dolby. ![]() |
