Default Nice virus!

I'm very careful with the internet so when I came home to find AVG telling me my PC had a virus I mad a bit ticked. It was my wife or kids, but whatever.

Anyways, I did everything I could think and could not get rid of it. It hi-jacked my browser, I had windows popping up all over the place. It disable AVG's ability to scan. I couldn't even run any other types scans from safe mode or find the name of the virus in the first place.

AVG didn't know about it so I'm assuming it was new.

Anyways, it's my first computer virus in 13 yrs and I had to reformat all my drives and lost a lot of data.

YAY!

From time to time I burn important items to my Taiyo Yudens! They last a life time. I guess I'm lucky as I've got the "most important" things covered. However there's a mile long list of missing goods.

It's going to take me a few months to get this system back to where it was.

have you tried Malwarebytes yet?

buy a external hdd enclosure for your current hdd and pull off your important data that way. Also there isn't really any anti-virus out there that can stop a virus from being on sites you know you shouldn't go to, like a lot of "game" websites are horrible.

Neither program would respond either via regular boot or safe mode. As I said, I threw everything at this thing.

I'd double click and nothing would happen.

I learned the hard way to fully protect my comp from all angles. I have RAID1 for redundancy, as well as automatically saving an image of my hard drive every few days. If I get anything nasty, it's easier just to go back and restore an image and only lose a day or two of data.

It happened to me once about a decade ago. There was nothing I could do and I ended up bringing it to my buddy for reformatting. I lost so much stuff it was heartbreakin' almost.

Anyway, now what I do with every file I want to keep is save it on an external HDD and only plug that in when I need it. AS soon as I'm done it gets unplugged. So far this has worked for me.

A squared free version has always found everything or bits of it so I knew what I was dealing with. Not that it matters now but Fastscan trojan remover is good as-well (if thats what you had)

Bulletproof is good as well (I don't know if they make it anymore)

I tried around a dozen applications but that one doesn't sound familiar. None would install. As I said, if was already installed, it was disabled, after that, nothing would install.

Windows Malicious Software tool was also disabled.

I figure it's late for AV suggestions, but I do suggest to create special accounts for your family members with limited privileges to avoid the same thing happening.
No AV will protect you from downloading and running executable with a virus. Especially when kids have access to the comp.

I know, that's what's brutal. When it was only me on the comp, no problems. But the kids have taken over the desktop, and boom. Not a big deal though, just changed all my passwords. Everything else will come back in due time.

Sometimes formatting is the easiest way, although it's a pain.

Just thought I'd share my recent experience.

I ran into a virus recently that sounds similar. It disabled all programs from running yet it would allow you to do some basic actions.

I learned with a lot of these viruses that they kick in and disable things after about 5-10 seconds after boot and/or login. If you can get to the task manager you can kill the bad processes, that took me about 3 tries before I was successful. Then I could install programs and run Malwarebytes on it.

Appears to be running smoothly now.

Viruses suck

Reformatting is the only way to be sure. I agree.

I even tried what you did, however ctr+alt+del was also locked down. I could open explorer and do searches, but the results took me to trash sites. Then 400 windows would open up. Anyways, she's all good now!

It sounds like one of those fake antivirus malware things that have been such a scourge for me lately. I had to clean a patient's computer, and two laptops in my dept in the past few months. They usually have a name like Security 2009 or something of that nature, and report that your PC has a lot of virus infections. They hijack your browser and return shopping results every time you search for a way to remove it, and even send up a fake blu screen of death. All with the aim of getting you to "buy" their "antivirus" software. What it really is, is malware holding your computer for ransom. The last one I had to clean up was so bad... the only thing to be done was a complete format.
