Default Espn & Abc??

So ESPN & ABC have all these football, basketball, and baseball games every week during there specific seasons, but they are only in 720p. WTF? Why do they do this? I was ok with it when I had a small tv, then started noticeing the difference when I got my 56" DLP. Now I have my 65" and it looks like crap especially when they are going up and down the field/court. When are they going to step up there broadcasts to 1080? You would think being the premier sports channel they would be on top of this crap. By the way I have DirecTV and sit 13 feet from the tv, and have no room to move further away.

well nobody broadcasts in 1080p and 720p and 1080i are arguably the same thing. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

720p & 1080i have very little difference on a small screen or from far away but they are very different in action scenes when the camera is going side to side. At a stand still it looks fine. Went from watching directv sunday ticket (1080i) all day and afternoon sunday to the monday night espn (720p) garbage and it is a huge difference.

I actually prefer watching sports in 720p over 1080i because of the progressive scan looks better during motion, whereas I prefer 1080i for programming like planet green where it is slow moving and you want those little details

Why would you want to watch sports in an interlaced over a progressive format? Sports are going to be fast-motion by nature, and the last thing I want to see is de-interlacing occuring along the edges of the motion. It's simply not going to look as good as a progressive, full screen image. They're actually doing the best thing in my opinion. If I had to choose only one resolution- 720p or 1080i for everything, I'd rather have the progressive image. Chances are the extra detail capability is going to be lost with all the compression and the cameras used anyway.

720p isn't what looks "like crap" by the way- it's the compression and the video cameras they're using, among other things. If you've ever had a chance to catch "Fringe" on Fox, you'll realize the error of that statement. They film it in 35mm, and it has amazing depth and details. Fox of course broadcasts in 720p. It's on tomorrow at 8pm if you're interested in seeing how good 720p can look.

NBC is even worse. Their Sunday night football games (broadcast in 1080i) have so many artifacts when there’s camera movement, that I can hardly watch.

Exactly, and 720p is usually used for sports because with a progressive picture is usually smoother than an interlaced picture, making fast motion easier to see with less blur, although maybe a small sacrifice in detail.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I just wish espn looked as good as sunday ticket, since espn has games on that I watch all year round. Just wondered what the reason was.

DirectTV will compress the basic HD channels so premium channels like Sunday ticket will get the higher bandwidth.

I have Time Warner cable with a Motorola 3416 HD DVR and ABC, ESPN, NBC Sunday night football look very nice.

Actually direct Tv's signal is WAY less compressed than Time Warner's The Signal for Direct Tv comes straight from your satelite to your reciever to your TV, whereas Time Warner Cable is run through a series of cables, then to your home then to your reciever then to your TV, I switched from Time Warner to Drect TV and the difference in PQ was definitely noticeable and I have to say Direct TV looks much better

I think you are wrong, DirecTV is highly compressed. That is one of the reasons they are even able to broadcast it over satellite. I have always found cable to look better personally, but Satellite is actually more compressed.
