Question laptop processors...help

i am interested in getting an intel core 2 duo processor for my laptop

im confused though because i see several, such as ones that start with t (like t6500) and some that start with q (like q9000) and p (like p7550)

what is the difference between them? im assuming the q is a quad processor, but im not sure. does anyone know where i can find out the order of these processors from best-worst?

thanks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

The P series is pretty well the same as the T series. only differences are the lower power consumption on the P's, and they have a lower multiplier, but increased the front side bus. So if prices are relatively the same, go with the P series. Unless for some reason you need a quad core in your laptop... Which is what the Q series is.

thanks, i took a look at the link and its all a little confusing/overwhelming for a non-tech guy

is it safe to say that Q is the best, followed by P and T? its probably not right seeing how many processors there are, but i dont know.

i just constantly see Q P and T available from laptops in stores

That depends on what you are doing. Sure, the Q has 4 cores but they are only at 2Ghz, if you are using it on a application that only makes use of 1 or 2 cores, then a dual core P will pull ahead of it. However, if you can make use of all 4 cores, then it is well worth it. Also realize that the quad core will use a lot more power than a dual core.

Price also comes into play, how much is the Q9000 vs the P7550?

i will be using the laptop for: general internet browsing, downloading and playing of music/movies (no game playing), general microsoft applications (word, powerpoint etc), and internet messaging. just the typical, nothing spectacular.

so is a q really needed for this? what kind of speed should i be looking for in my processor? 2.1ghz seems to be what im finding mostly

also, the price difference of the q and p are quite substantial and im not looking to pay over $800 or $900 for this laptop

You wouldn't need anything over a dual core, and 2Ghz is plenty fast for web browsing etc. I'd suggest getting whatever is cheaper, I think the T series is cheapest (don't quote me on that, I haven't looked at laptop lineup in a while ).

Basically, looks for a dual core around 1.8-2.2Ghz with a 2-3Mb level 2 cache.

thanks, the following is pretty much a standard of what ive be looking for:

intel core 2 duo processor
2-2.2ghz
4gb memory
320gb hard drive
HDMI
13-14" screen

those would work for my needs correct? (aside from the screen size and hdmi which are just personal preferences of mine )

Thats a good start, I would recommend trying to get a 7200rpm 320gb drive instead of the 5400's they usually put in.
